Excellent hike for mountain views. Most people head straight up the Phelps Creek trail to Spider Meadow so I only saw one other person on the side trail to Carne Mountain even on a bright sunny Saturday. Starts out with switchbacks in the shade of the trees and then opens up with great views of Buck Mountain. Keep climbing and you will eventually come to a flat meadow with a creek running through it as well as a few marmots. After about another 1/4 mile you will see a sign for the Old Gib Mountain trail. Instead take the trail left until you reach the pass. Take another left for a short scramble up to the peak of Carne Mountain and endless views of snow covered peaks and green meadows.
