Hike the core of a volcano! An easy-moderate walk up this 845ft tall remnant of a 57,000 year old eruption. Beacon Rock is a the core of an ancient volcano. Over thousands of years, hundreds of massive floods (originating in Missoula Montana) careened through the Columbia River Gorge and carved away the volcano's main structure, leaving only the lava core you see today. Depending on the definition and expert you talk to, it is the second largest free standing monolith in the northern hemisphere! The trail up Beacon Rock is short and manageable for day-hikers of all ages, at just under a mile each direction. It is well maintained, although not paved most the way. BACKGROUND: Beacon Rock is 848 feet (258 m) tall and is composed of Basalt. The United States Army Corps of Engineers planned to destroy the rock to supply material for the jetty at the mouth of the ColumbiaIn. In 1915 Henry Biddle purchased the rock for $1 and over the next three years constructed the switchbacks and trail, most of which is still in use today. After his death, Biddle's family tried to make it a state park. At first Washington refused the gift, but changed its position when Oregon offered to accept. $10 day pass needed

A short, but thoroughly enjoyable hike to the top. It was a little rainy but otherwise good weather wise. I’ll be going again.

Rated moderate because you will be going up inclined switchbacks most the time up. Easy enough for all levels though as it’s only a mile and many breaks can be taken. View up at the top is great, but can get crowded as there is not a ton of room.

First time out and with the family. Cool drizzle and overcast but an enjoyable hike.

Very nice trail for people who aren't used to climbing mountains but still want to see something. Mostly granite trail, with some dirt sections.

Easy hike. Great views of the Columbia River. Would highly recommend for people with less experienced hikers or young kids.

This was really nice- cool views, not super hard, doesn’t take long but great to stretch the legs if you’re out sightseeing. One note - the trailhead does say it is 1.8 miles. Our GPS captured 1.5. So, it might be a tad longer than listed.

This was a great family hike. Switchbacks were fairly easy. Fantastic views, especially in the fall with all the leaves changing. High recommend.

After reading the reviews , I wasn’t sure what to expect. It’s actually close to a mile up to the top of Beacon Rock, climbing all the way. The trail is plenty wide enough with numerous observation points along the way. If heights are a problem, this may not be the trail for you. The switch backs are right on top of each other for most of the trail, hence the need for the railing. The views along the way and at the top make this short trail well worth the effort.

I finally stopped and took a walk to the top after 20 years of driving past it. It's a quick jaunt to the top with interesting "trail" construction and people watching.

I loved that it was not stairs. It was inclines and switchbacks. Awesome views!

Only 25 minutes to hike to the top, pretty much nothing but switchbacks the whole way. $10 to park! Or the other option is if you happen to have a discover pass...it was a short hike and I didn’t think it was worth $10 so I went down the road a bit and parked on a side street where I received a parking ticket, don’t try and beat the system they are on top of things.
