Note: As of September 2020, this trailhead is closed due to COVID-19. Please check here for more information: https://parks.state.wa.us/AlertCenter.aspx?AID=2693 Hike the core of a volcano! An easy-moderate walk up this 845ft tall remnant of a 57,000 year old eruption. Beacon Rock is a the core of an ancient volcano. Over thousands of years, hundreds of massive floods (originating in Missoula, Montana) careened through the Columbia River Gorge and carved away the volcano's main structure, leaving only the lava core you see today. Depending on the definition and expert you talk to, it is the second largest free standing monolith in the northern hemisphere! The trail up Beacon Rock is short and manageable for day-hikers of all ages, at just under a mile each direction. It is well maintained, although not paved most the way. Beacon Rock is 848 feet (258 m) tall and is composed of Basalt. The United States Army Corps of Engineers planned to destroy the rock to supply material for the jetty at the mouth of the ColumbiaIn. In 1915, Henry Biddle purchased the rock for $1 and over the next three years constructed the switchbacks and trail, most of which is still in use today. After his death, Biddle's family tried to make it a state park. At first Washington refused the gift, but changed its position when Oregon offered to accept. $10 day pass needed

You will need a WA Discovery Pass

Beacon Rock State Park Highway 14 Skamania, WA Tel: 509.427.8265

Expect wind at the base and top, but it is generally calm on the way up...so don't be fooled into over-dressing...the hike WILL warm you up! Even on a moderate/cool day, shorts are preferable to pants. (Take a look at those coming down the trail, and notice everyone has shed most their layers.) There are no restrooms or water sources along the way, so be sure to utilize the facilities BEFORE heading up. As with all WA State Parks, a daily or annual Discover Pass must be displayed by each vehicle. Daily passes are sold via an automated pay-station for $10. NOTE: Northwest Forrest Passes are NOT accepted!

From Seattle, I-5 south to Vancouver. Just north of Vancouver, take I-205 south. Follow I-205 south to the Hwy. 14 exit (last exit before crossing the Columbia River into Oregon). Follow Hwy. 14 east. Beacon Rock and the park entrance are located at mile post 35.

The trail to the summit of Beacon Rock is closed. However, you can still hike around the base of the rock. Very cool and lots of history.

WalkingGreat!

Adding this one as a review from a little over a year ago - visited while on a trip from Palouse and Oregon - this one was super-crowded, but very neat. Makes sense that it’s closed now due to covid. Had some great views.

Trail was good, well maintained. I did this hike a year ago but I’m just now giving the review. It has great views of the gorge.

Trail is closed. They put cones up but the actual trail closed sign was hard to spot unless you don’t have a discover pass (it was a very tiny sign on the payment box, the big sign board just has a sign asking you to keep social distance)

Not sure how people are saying they had a good time hiking this recently due to it being closed. Respect the parks and don’t use areas that are closed. I’m happy people are starting to be fined for it now as well. Things won’t open back up if people aren’t doing what is being asked. Have some common sense and respect. I stopped just to check and enjoy it from the parking area and had to remind a family that moved a barrier to go to the climbing area that it’s still closed. Please be adults and just respect the parks.

This trail gets pretty busy. Wonderful view of the gorge from the top. It is currently closed due to Covid but I highly recommend this for a short workout. Requires a day parking pass or a Discover Washington Pass

The main hiking trail is still closed as of 7/19/20 and a discover pass is required. Great starter hike in the gorge for all ages as a lot of it is paved and it is relatively short. Around a mile each way.

(When open) I wasn’t impressed, better views on other trails down the road. Too many people at the top, we had to wait our “turn” to see anything

This trail is actually closed. Unlike some other trails that say closed but are actually open, there are blocks in front of each trail head and the entire parking lot.

Great trail. Easy to hike up to the top. The top was small and the view on the way up was honestly better than the peak. But it was great.

Can't argue with a quick run up to the top of Beacon Rock. Only 1 car when I arrived at 9am. A whole bunch more by the time I got down. If you're out here, I would at least add something else like Pool of the Winds, or Wind Mountain a little further east. I did Hamilton Mountain.
