Beautiful hike. The lake is worth it but be prepared that after the junction, the last mile is quite the elevation gain and some rock scrambling. However, our 9 and 11 year old kept up. Got a beautiful cuttie catch up there on the fly. Only 3 campsites...in Sept we used no bug spray and just ignored horse flies and bees. I can see it being sloppy in spring with bad mosquitos but we had none. you can also see part of the PCT trail high up so if you hear voices you aren't crazy...
