As many other reviewers have mentioned, the trails are poorly marked, so plan to spend a bit of extra time to find and stay on the path. The strenuous stretch of the trail is aptly named - make sure to wear closed toed shoes if you decide to go down that path.

It was great! We could use better markings to clearly mark which trail u r on. Western is a big trail with blue, red, yellow, orange plus probably more, but I’m not which trail is which. Almost got lost! Thank God for Maps and Waze!

Great trail, well kept and able to vary toughness. About 2 hours for 6 miles. Beware of horse droppings

Great trail, we hiked the entire thing: 6.7 miles. You’ll get to a point where you have the option between strenuous and moderate. I highly recommend the strenuous path, it gets a bit rocky but the view to the stream below is gorgeous.

If it wasn’t for having my phone with live GPS I would have gotten lost four times. I had to keep back tracking because the blue blazes are not well marked and at intersections the signs are confusing. Have someone with you who either knows this trail or a well charged phone. Otherwise, great terrain, lots to look at and enjoy, plenty of shady areas, benches, or open spots to stop. If it wasn’t for the trail being so terribly marked I would have given it 5 stars.

This was a great short trail that will test your elevation skills. You have a few good uphill climbs that aren't too bad but will work you. In addition is is one area that's quite a bit of a scramble. It's extremely narrow, worth only one person being able to pass at a time. There is an option to take the moderate at that point but why not try the scramble? FYI, We had to modify our route on this trail for this hike because we had a group of hikers with us w/o lights and we need to get back before dark. We narrowly made it. Definitely going back to hike it as designed

I wouldn't say this trail is easy. I came today to scout the trail for an upcoming meditative hike and when thinking about new people on that trail I'm not sure. My app recorded it at 7 miles but that is due in large part to getting turned around based on what the trail signs said and the app said. I'm going to modify this trail for the people I am bringing. It's a BEAUTIFUL trail but not easy in the sense that brand new people wouldn't struggle.

Alright for a city meander in the early morning or the changing of cold seasons. Fun trail running.

Overall it was just okay. No really nice views on the trail. A lot of walking near roads including a lot of crossing roads. The trail can be kind of confusing to follow because of this. A lot of trail runners, a lot of people with dogs on (and a lot off) leash. I don’t personally mind dogs, but it is annoying because all dogs are supposed to be on leash. It’s just a courtesy so everyone can enjoy the trail, you and your dog aren’t special, follow the rules. With everyone there it’s fairly busy (even without it being “nice” out). The hike was okay, nothing difficult at all. Definitely more like a 6 mile hike.

Awesome hike in the city. Followed the map provided here and it was much longer than 5.2. Great for a beautiful day. Will definitely do this again.

Easy trail, made for a great little winter hike! Generally not too hard to follow, although I did have to check the map several times at some of the forks. Would do again!

Nice winter hike. Can be difficult to follow the blazes, they are inconsistently marked and often confusing. Lots of fallen leaves which hides roots and rocks, but overall very nice.

Began at the south entrance/exit of the National Smithsonian Zoo, following all of Western Ridge Trail. Trail was well marked and had one point with information on local wildlife. Along Western Ridge trail, it split into moderate and strenuous trails which are labeled clearly. Once it merged into Rock Creek trail, trail was clear and led to Boulder Bridge which is great for some pictures. The path runs along a creek with soothing sounds. The path is great for bike rides and runs.
