Getting There

Wooded trail and boardwalk over swamp, tribute to our 26th President. The Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Association purchased this 88.5-acre island in 1932 and dedicated it to the public in memory of Roosevelt. Frederick Law Olmstead, Jr., a leading landscape architect, worked with the Civilian Conservation Corps to bring a neglected island into a mature woodland sanctuary. Architect Eric Gugler designed the memorial and Sculptor Paul Manship created the central statue. The dedication ceremony took place in October 1967. The island has a diverse history. Evidence shows that Native Americans used the island as a seasonal fishing village. The site was named "My Lord's Island," when King Charles granted it to Lord Baltimore. Today, the National Park Service protects the island, while providing for public enjoyment. While you are here, savor the sounds of the outdoors as you travel through marsh, swamp, and forest.

Park at Theodore Roosevelt Island parking lot off the George Washington Memorial Parkway.

A little muddy but great trail. one of them on the map doesn't actually exist so be careful finding your way back.

loved this trail. Some paths are not clearly marked or are very narrow but have mostly dry and great view :)

It is a wonderful place to go for everyone- families, young people, dogs, etc. Watch out! It's muddy. There are lots of side trails that I could go on with my dog to go off leash a bit. He could swim there as well. Five stars if it weren't so muddy.

This is a great destination year-round, but especially on winter mornings. The view of the city from the Eastern portion of the loop is beautiful. This is a great spot to come with your dog (long-leash friendly wide trails with good visibility except the north-eastern bit that goes down by the water, and the swamp-trail boardwalk, both of which you can detour around if you want). Full loop with dog takes between 45 mins and 1 hour. Seems like some parts are perpetually muddy regardless of the weather, so plan accordingly. We have seen quite a few deer during our visits as well.

This was definitely a winter hike, and I look forward to going back to see the difference when there are leaves on the trees and flowers in bloom, as well as water in the memorial. The West Side of the trail had more muddy spots, but the East Side was better, and the North Side had more boardwalk areas. Ot got busy with a lot of families on a Sunday around 9:30 a.m.
