Getting There

A very nice hike through wooded, moderately steep terrain. The paths are well maintained, and fairly heavily traveled. This is a very popular park, so you can expect to run into other hikers here, especially on the weekend. There are many trails in the area to choose from, ranging from less than a mile to a loop of about 8 miles. The park trails connect up to the Appalachian Trail, south of where it heads into Ashby Gap. This hike covers a popular loop: up the Gap Run Trail to the North Ridge Trial, then down the South Ridge Trail. Most of the trails are well shaded by tree cover, though there are a few nice scenic overlooks that are open. There are many facilities here, but the park is mainly geared towards hiking.

Beautiful views at the Piedmint Trail Vista. Nice incline going up clockwise. Trail well maintained.

HikingGreat!

I have not seen so many people at Sky Meadows. I had to park far away (about a mile) from the visitor center, but glad that I was able to get in. Trails were in good conditions; mud is largely dry now. Pretty white flowers and small butterflies. Going clockwise as usual--strenuous climb at the front, followed by strolling on the AT and then the pretty meadows. More than half of the people did not wear a mask, including a ranger-led group of hikers, and the ranger.

The elevation was a good workout and the views along the way were nice. The map doesn’t match the trail on the Southridge side for a bit, at least if you’re doing it counterclockwise. Just keep following the yellow blazes.

Great trail! Just challenging enough to make you glad you brought water, but the views are fantastic!

We ended up having to turn back at the Whitehouse overlook due to a personal commitment but I wish we hadn't had to; we caught a lucky break in the middle of an ice storm and had the park almost all to ourselves. I can't imagine we'll have that kind of luck again any time soon. This is probably the best maintained state park I've ever been to. The trails are well marked and nicely varied between wooded trails, open fields and gravel roads. It gets slammed in all but the worst weather so plan accordingly. Daily rate parking is $7 and can be paid online if needed.

HikingMuddy

South Ridge trail very muddy, particularly the eastern half. Part of Ambassador trail also muddy. This is thick and sticky mud that made boots heavy and losing traction. I am used to hiking in muddy conditions but this seemed different and unpleasant. I am a pass holder and hiked in this great park often since last April and always enjoyed my hikes. Perhaps winter is problematic?

Hiked the trail on a warm winter day (Dec 28 low 50s) a few days after snow fall. The trail was really muddy and slippery in spots. Beautiful views and great meadow at the top. Lots of fun but would be best to wait for ground to dry out first. Some traffic on the trail. We arrived around 10 am and had to park in overflow area.

Went clockwise like others recommended. Steep uphill right off the bat. If you are carrying weight (pack+baby+supplies was roughly 40lb) I HIGHLY recommend bringing trekking poles!! I would have had a rough time without. Nice, peaceful weekday hike. Views, in my opinion were worth the climb! Well marked, and was fun hopping on the AT for a bit! Would definitely do again!
