A very nice hike through wooded, moderately steep terrain. The paths are well maintained, and fairly heavily traveled. This is a very popular park, so you can expect to run into other hikers here, especially on the weekend. There are many trails in the area to choose from, ranging from less than a mile to a loop of about 8 miles. The park trails connect up to the Appalachian Trail, south of where it heads into Ashby Gap. This hike covers a popular loop: up the Gap Run Trail to the North Ridge Trial, then down the South Ridge Trail. Most of the trails are well shaded by tree cover, though there are a few nice scenic overlooks that are open. There are many facilities here, but the park is mainly geared towards hiking.

Did this as a trail run to include the full sky meadows loop about 6.5/7 miles. There is nothing special about the trail overall. The overlook is very beautiful. Trail is well kept. Keep an eye in the blazes as it changes throughout the trail. This was perfect for a run. First incline is steep, especially for a start. Gets your heart rate up then a good balance of incline and decline. Took just over 90 min to complete the full 7 miles. Fun afternoon run. 7.00 parking fee per car. I will be back to lower my time!

A few tips. Grab a trail map on your way up to the rangers office area bc there’s no cell service in the parking lot or until you climb for a bit. The name of this hike is not on their post of trails at the start, so we had to go back and grab a map, as I hadn’t downloaded this and missed the exact trail route tips. Piedmont overlook or North Ridge will get to Ambassador Whitehouse trail as well, but it’s only about 3.5 miles total, and first 10-15 min of Piedmont is basically straight up in the sun so be prepared for a hefty workout to start if you go that route. Great area to hike with a great view, beautiful country. Looking forward to exploring more another time and doing this exact route!

Great wooded trail with a $7 entry/parking fee. Took approx 2.5 hrs at a casual pace.

Since the quarantine began, my husband and I have made a point to try a new hike each weekend. So far, this has been our favorite because of the variety in scenery, from woods to prairies to overlooks. It is also a great workout. Like other reviewers, I highly recommend going clockwise to leave the best piece for last. Including the walk to/from the lot and some off-path excursions, this trail ended up being 6 miles long and took 2.5 hours (including time to take in the views and snap pictures). On weekends, the park fee is $10. To get to the trail from the lot, walk towards the park office and make a left. There are sections of open fields so bring adequate sun protection.

Amazing hike with incredible views. Part of it is on the Appalachian Trail. Well marked and maintained would recommend taking the route clockwise so you can come down the mountain with the great, open prairie views.

Parking is $7 and there is no one working the booth so take exact change. Place was pretty empty today. Trails are perfectly blazed and in great condition. They had Porta John's out there which were also very nice and had hand sanitizer in them. Get out there and enjoy.

Saw a dozen or so people but mostly quiet. Multiple viewpoints and benches. Windy. Some information posts along way. Very well labeled and easy to navigate. Tranquil area!

Hey, anything is better than staying home! But, this trail is an all-time favorite! Passed very few people. It’s uphill in the beginning, levels off, then uphill again. Great workout! I needed this. I was going crazy at home. Do it! It feels soooo good!

Nice woods and fields!! This hike has a good incline that gets your heart going but not difficult. For the most incline start your hike clockwise once you reach the white park house up a little ways from the main parking lot. It begins on a gravel road then turns right and up you go!

Went hiking on the Whitehouse Overlook trail on a weekday and only saw a handful of people during the entire hike. It was a well marked and maintained trail, but it was a bit muddy in certain areas. Definitely a good workout if you go clockwise with a decent amount of inclines and great views along the way. Will come back to hike here again!

Great hike!! It's very well marked and maintained, easy to follow and the overlooks have spectacular views! We did it as recommended by the lady from the visitor center: clockwise!

Muddy in places. Got lost looking for Lost Trail Mountain. Couldn’t pick up markers for that trail like the other ones. Did 5 miles all together today.

A great and truly moderate hike through the woods and meadows. I'd recommend starting on the South Ridge trail direction rather than the Piedmont Overlook, it's a more fun and manageable climb up. The trails are really clearly marked at all crossings with lots of clear blazes throughout.

We went on the hike for a friend's birthday party. At the staff's suggestion we did the clockwise route to get the steep incline over with earlier and because coming down we could see the great views in front of us (instead of behind us). It was icy going up (glad we didn't have to deal with the ice coming down!). Lots of mud throughout the hike up and down -- glad we brought a change of clothes. Very cold wind at the peak. A nice variety with the landscape. Good flatter walking/talking stretches of trail. Met some lovely fellow hikers. Definitely going to hike this again.

This is my favorite hike in the world. Lengthy decent day hike but nothing too crazy - a few steep sections in the first third but then pretty easy going, just long. Meadows and look out at the end is beautiful. Bring snacks for the picnic table. The farm and guest center at the entrance is lots of fun - look ahead to see if they have events or live music. And when you’re done head over to Barrel Oak Winery on the same exit. My favorite DC escape day.

Great trail!
