Note: This trail can get very washed out after significant rainfall and flooding. Dogs are allowed on this trail however users report that it may be difficult for them due to scrambles and creek crossing. Great river views plus stream, falls and woods The trail starts in the C1 parking area and heads down to the Potomac River. The markers are yellow until you reach the river where you follow blue markers of the Potomac Heritage trail to the northwest along the river. You cross over Turkey Run and continue to Dead Run. Cross over Dead Run and go up stream, following the yellow markers again. Just after passing under the GW parkway bridge, turn left, cross the run and follow the yellow markers southeast until you reach Turkey Run again. Turn left and at the bridge cross over the run and follow the yellow trail up the hill and back to the parking lot.

Difficult to find the trail at times, especially near the waterfalls

Let me start by saying that I am a beginner hiker who’s working on getting in shape! I would not classify this trail as difficult, rather a moderate with some tricky portions. It was super enjoyable, we took our time and paced ourselves in the humidity. ps - beware of snakes! we saw two on the rock scramble portion.

The views of this trail are incredibly beautiful. However, you would have to stop and take your bike in your shoulder for a total of 1 miles. It’s totally worth it.

Markings are difficult to see at times. Not entirely sure we followed the trail exactly but this app helped us stay on track. Luckily gps worked well on the trail. When coming down the rock scrambles and you are following the yellow markings and see the Potomac start looking for the blue markings to the right and follow that trail. We kept following the yellow and ended up off trail and almost to 495! Did not find this trail difficult but only thought so because we got off course. Otherwise I would say this trail is moderate. Would not bring dogs or small children

Extremely difficult and rocky trail. I would not bring my dogs, or children under 15 years. Need to be in excellent health/shape. Tough on ankles.

This was a great trail that was hard but at the same time anyone can do it. We saw a lot of kids and dogs on the trail. Not that many people wearing mask but at the same time there wasn’t that many people on the trail at one time. We were able to jog a lot of this trail. It was also very shady on a sunny day. It definitely is well marked you have to look for the yellow and blue/greenish markings. If you use the map on this to help you find your next marking you’ll be golden lol. Enjoy your hike!

What a hike. Definitely more challenging than anticipated. We parked in C1 and we took the left fork which is the yellow trail blaze. The trail is not marked well at times, especially when there is scrambling. The trail blaze turns green near the river and its a gently hike along the river until the climb back to the parking lot starts. Loved it.

6/27/20- Couldn’t do the whole trail bec they were building a staircase down to the river. We basically wandered around on any trail we saw. Not a workout but got some good pics of fungi.
