THE TRAIL *DOES* REACH THE SUMMIT! :) Commenting bc I met some folks out there today who echoed what I see in comments here. After the two steep rock scrambles, you will reach another that seems like the end of the road. Climb that one and go straight another few yards. :) you will be richly rewarded!

For a shorter hike, this is still a challenge! There are some steep hiking intermixed with gradual switchbacks. The views aren't the same 360 panoramas like on Big Schloss, but are fantastic vistas none-the-less. Near the top, there are several steep rock scrambles that I was not expecting, but thoroughly enjoyed. Unfortunately, there's some ice hiding between the boulders so footing is a bit treacherous this time of year. Some shoe spikes or trekking poles are recommended. Be aware that the AllTrails app will constantly notify you that you're "Off Route" because the route does not line up with the actual trail - no worries just follow your yellow blazes! Also, the trail does NOT take you to the summit/peak of the mountain. There's no trail to the summit that I saw, nor any views once I got up there. The best views are about a 0.1-0.2 miles or so before the summit.

I backpacked to an amazing campsite by overlook. It is very steep so tough trail even though it's short. 2 rock scrambles by overlook. 2nd one is tougher. same parking lot as big schloss so do that hike also. big schloss has better views. no water sources

this is harder on the muscles than big schloss. the rock scrambling is not dangerous though, it almost feels like climbing stairs, so kids (mine are 3, 6, and 8) will love the outdoor playground (for reference, I think billy goat trail section A is dangerous). the view is not as pretty as big schloss, but the trail is worth it! parking is limited

Went on a Sunday morning and had the entire trail and summit to ourselves, except for some campers at the trailhead. Absolutely beautiful, easy, with a couple of fun rocky spots.

In addition to the campsite at the summit there are two great sites where it levels out before the first rock scramble.

HikingGreat!

This was a beautiful trail. We expected to see more people but only saw 3 different couples. My husband and I hiked it with our 9 and 11 year olds and 2 dogs. So thankful we left our 12 year old dog home. The rocky scramble at the top would’ve been impossible.

Really pretty hike, fairly busy on a Friday. Rock scramble near summit was fun and not too challenging. Rock outcrop at top was perfect lunch spot with views of the valley and both Virginia and West Virginia .

Great hike! I downloaded the map in advance and it kept notifying me that we were off the trail (even though I wasn’t). Wonderful views and very windy at the top. Only saw one other couple on the entire hike.

If you're a seasoned hiking family with young kids, don't let the descriptions saying this is not family-friendly scare you. We hiked with our 8-month-old in the baby carrier and 3-year-old on foot (in hiking boots) in 3 hrs. 45 mins at the toddler's pace, with about 45 mins at the summit, and a lot of encouragement along the way :) Rock scrambles are trickier on the way down than up, but take it slow and you'll be fine. The varied terrain is beautiful, especially the part through the open forest before the scrambles. Trail is easy to follow with yellow blazes every 100 feet or so. Bring bug spray -- the summit has a lot of tiny biting flies.
