Overall Run Falls via Thompson Hollow is a 2 mile heavily trafficked out and back trail located near Bentonville, Virginia that features a waterfall and is rated as moderate. The trail is primarily used for hiking and walking.
Shenandoah National Park charges a fee to enter. Fees are $35 per vehicle or $25 per motorcycle. If you are entering on foot, horse, or bike the fee is $15 per person. You can also purchase a park specific annual pass for $55. This is a great trail alternative to starting in Shenandoah. Once you arrive at Thompson Hollow, its clearly marked where to park. Be sure to follow to rules or you could get towed. Just under 1/2 mile of gravel road to the trailhead. There's a lot of PRIVATE property/no trespassing signs, just continue until you get to the tree marked with blue spray paint. From parking to the falls is about 3 miles, steep uphill the last half of the hike there. The view is well worth the steep incline.
The pictures and description of this trail are misleading. This trail will take you to another trail that takes you to the large falls. Not directly to the large falls. However, this trail still takes you to a beautiful creak with a smaller set of waterfalls and somewhat of a watering hole. Like one of the other commenters said it’s an extra couple of miles to see the actual large waterfall.
This is a great trail alternative to starting in Shenandoah. The map is misleading,, total hike if you go to the falls is almost 6 miles in and out. Once you arrive at Thompson Hollow, its clearly marked where to park. Be sure to follow to rules or you could get towed. Walk just under 1/2 mile of gravel road to the trailhead. There's a lot of private property/no trespassing signs, just continue until you get to the tree marked with blue spray paint, that's the trailhead.. Now you are on the trail marked on the map, its about 1 mile from the trailhead to the trail that goes to Overall Falls- take a left from there and its two miles to the falls. Its a steep uphill for the last mile and a half. Total distance from parking to the falls is about 3 miles. The view is well worth the steep incline. Gorgeous.
It was a great hike with my family to celebrate our 16 wedding anniversary!
Decent loop. A good physical challenge. The only view was Overall Run Falls though.
Seriously, this trail is so underrated. It wasn’t too crowded, likely because swim season is over, but there is definitely limited parking. Other reviewers directions were immensely helpful- continue down gravel path until you hit a fence, next to which there is a wooded trail. Follow it until you hit a T. Take a right. At the three pronged fork, go left for the falls and pools. They’re stunning! You can also continue straight to walk along the stream and see smaller pools/cascades. It’s a wonderful trail and the falls are spectacular, though you will NOT hit Overall Run falls. The larger waterfall is much further away and harder to get to. There are also no mountainous views on this trail
