Highly recommended! Completed this hike on a cool June day. We began to the right, which serves as a wide rocky road, down the hill. The highlights are the two waterfalls- the Dark Hallows Falls and Rose River Falls, and an extended period where the trails runs parallel to the river, with dozens of small waterfalls and beautiful views. It is longer than listed- around 4.5 miles.

This trail is charming. We went on a weekday and arrived around 11:30. The lot was mostly full and was overflowing into the scenic view next to it. We started the full loop by turning left and going clockwise. You descend quickly over a rocky trail. We saw a bear just a few minutes in. About 1.25 miles in you hit the first of the waterfalls. Its a beautiful place to stop in the middle of the falls with two nice wading pools. After that you continue around and spend several miles climbing next to the creek bed. There are many places to explore, including a rock stacking garden, and a few places to swim. It was nice to have so many distractions and places to stop on the way back up the mountain. In this direction, you finish the last mile or so ascending on the gravel fire road. Its an easy way to finish the hike.

My son and did this hike this afternoon. It rained on us for about a half hour, but with some rain gear it was fine. Nice hike with lots of views of falls. Hiking along flowing water is always enjoyable. Dark Hollow Falls is really impressive, but the large crowd there is quite concerning given the COVID crisis. I recommend the entire loop hike. The Rose River Falls at the bottom were also impressive.

Nice hike, lots of waterfalls. Pretty steep walk back but doable if you’re in decent shape.

Loved this loop for its challenge. It also takes you by Dark Hallow Falls so that you can avoid that steep decline but still enjoy your second set of falls. Very rocky for the middle portion but so many beautiful spots to take a break and relax. Take the trail clockwise if you want to avoid a rocky steep descent.

Well maintained trail. Did it clockwise so that the end was a nice gradual incline on the fire road back to the parking lot - which you will want after the 800 foot climb up from the base of the falls! Plenty of shade, sneakers work fine. Lots of beautiful waterfalls all along the hike. Busiest hike we had all week and sadly only about 1/3 of folks wear masks when they pass you.

Whew! This was a great trail, but a tougher hike than expected. Pretty much entirely downhill first half, then entirely uphill the next which was tiring. But very scenic! Great views of the waterfalls and stream so plenty of places to rest and enjoy nature.

Half of it very well paved, half a fun rock scramble. Come early to beat crowds. Parallels a nice river

Loved this - definitely closer to 4 miles. Lots of incline, rocks and roots. Brought the dog and he absolutely loved it. Not an easy hike but super worth it!

A super fun short hike worth your time. See both Rose River and Dark Hollow falls. Most definitely walk the horse path to trail down and outbound and the fire road from the base of Dark Hollow/bridge back. You get all the ‘bang’ as you go down to Rose River Falls and come up along the outlet of Dark Hollow. Very nice and cool.

Great hike that follows the river much of the way. Took a chilly dip in the water and it was refreshing!

Really nice trail we went right on the entrance of the loop which is a steady downhill on a fire road. After the first mile or so at the bottom of the hill you get to the falls and if you walk up the hill on a steady path you follow the falls to meet up with dark hollow fall (another way to access that sire from a less popular trail). Hike back after that pitstop follows the river than a steep and rocky climb to finish the loop. A fun hike.

This trail is severely undervalued! I wasn’t expecting such a beautiful hike. The entire trail runs along the river making way for waterfalls and hidden swimming holes throughout. You won’t be disappointed!

Great early morning hike. Saw a doe and her fawn. I would definitely recommend starting by going down the horse trail and finish with the fire road. The gentle incline is nice to end the hike with.

Probably the best falls and hike due to lack of crowds during a week of hiking at Shenandoah. Did the down and back up in about an hour. Allow more time for swimming. Trail in great shape.

Great trail, I would also recommend taking the horse trail to begin. The hike back up is a bit strenuous, but not terrible. Did see about a 4 foot black snake so keep an eye out!
