This loop of Read Mountain Preserve begins on the Buzzard Rock trail (blue blazes). At the first trail junction, take a left on the Rocky Way trail (yellow blazes) and continue for 1.45 miles (bypassing the Crossover Trail) as you traverse the ridge to the CCC trail (red blazes). Gain the summit ridge on the CCC trail for .82 miles until you reach the junction with Buzzard Rock trail. Here, you can take a quick jaunt to Buzzard Rock. Otherwise, descend via the Buzzard Rock and Crossover Trail back to the parking area.

Good hike. I usually go the other way around the loop.

This hike is a nice (and slightly-longer) alternative to the traditional Buzzard Rock trail at Read Mountain. It's well-marked with blazes and signs, and easy enough to follow, even in the snow. Add a few tenths of a mile to make it over to Buzzard Rock for great views. There's a well-kept port-a-potty at the trailhead, and plenty of parking. This is a very easy trailhead to get to, and close to the Roanoke area. Take advantage of it!
