The park has a sizable network of trails for hiking, biking, horseback riding, and mountain biking. Just 20 miles from downtown Richmond, the capital of Virginia, Pocahontas State Park has been one of the more popular parks in the state park system. Swift Creek forms the nucleus of the park, which is centered in a wildlife management area.Built by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC), this was the first recreational park in the Richmond-Petersburg-Hopewell area. The National Park Service donated the facility to Virginia State Parks in 1946, making it the largest Virginia state parks with more than 7,600 acres and two small lakes. The area was renamed Pocahontas State Park and Pocahontas State Forest and was operated under a cooperative management arrangement with the Department of Forestry. In 1989 a new master plan, funded jointly by the Commonwealth of Virginia and Chesterfield County, called for expansion of park facilities to accommodate the large urban population surrounding the park.

My son (11) and I enjoyed this trail. We got a little mixed up and ended up on the bike only bit (Lake View Loop) but gutted it out until we regained the hiking trail. We clocked in a little over 7 miles total in 3 hours with a pause for lunch in there at the halfway mark.

Definitely will come back and maybe bring the bike out!

Lakeview is a bike trail, so if you start on Powhatan Trail walking you have to turn back at the Lakeview Loop.

I hiked the Beaver Lake Trail 2.47 miles. Moderate and beautiful views of the lake.

Good Sunday afternoon trail.

Nice hike, not much traffic, great views of Swift Creek Lake. Trail marks are a little confusing at the beginning.

I saw dark star orchestra here and they allowed the group to camp for two days. It was so much fun. I hope to do it again!

Hiked the Beaver Lake Trail today (a little under 3 miles) and it was a great little hike for my 7 month pregnant self. Not too many hills or strenuous stretches and a clearly marked loop from the Nature Center.

Great hiking trail! Went on Bright Hope trail, which was about 5 miles. Super fun and clearly marked. Went on a Sunday at 12 and ran into 3 runners, 5 bikers, and 7 horseback riders. Would definitely recommend this trail!!

Great Park to visit.

The trails are more work here than the flatter coastal parks, but I loved it.

We did the beaver lake trail about 2 miles with an all terrain stroller. Super nice but next time I will definitely wear the baby in a carrier.

Completed the Old Mill trail today. Beautiful scenery and the nature center is interesting as well. Would highly recommend visiting this park.

Did this park during a mud run and loved it. There seems to be a bunch more trails then just the ones we actually did and plenty of beautiful scenery.

Great place to get into the woods and away from the suburbs or the city. Very big state park and lots of trails.

This park was my second and third time mountain biking, and this trail is perfect for all skill levels. There are a multitude of obstacles to tackle to include logs, ditches, and areas that require some tight manuevering. Even on the less technical trails, for those that enjoy a good brush with drawing blood and / or causing serious harm to yourself, you can really open it up and catch some serious speed and have a few close calls with the trees. Third time we went out here we actually found a double black diamond that had monster drops into ditches, logs disigned to balance across, and even see saws. The possibilities are endless at this park, and anyone close to this area should seriously consider adding this to your to do list.

WOW! What a great park. We will definitely return. The trails east of here are flat but the trails here at Pocahontas are not shy about going up and down. Most of the trails in the park are rated intermediate but you can find easy or difficult if you want.

I love this park! Most Virginia State Parks are fantastic, but this one is super. Most of the trails are well maintained. There is a great variety of terrain and scenery. All of the rangers are friendly. If you get bored of hiking though a beautiful forest, there are a lot of other activities.

Camping in this park is very comfortable given the areas population and close proximity to a major city. Entertainment a plus, great atmosphere and friendly staff. Pool is a car ride from camping area but Great for kids.

There is more than 10 miles of trails. Also as far as I know this park is accessible year round.

Very "rooty" trails. Great single tracks...but I had to get out on the trail since there is very few reviews on this area.

new Petersburg,Virginia

Monday, August 16, 2010

Virginia's largest and oldest State Park, within 30 minutes of downtown Richmond and downtown Petersburg. Many interesting trails, some intersecting. Some hills but not steep, lots of forest and wildlife. Great for orienteering, hiking, bike riding and horseback riding (bikes and horses restricted on some trails, which are clearly marked). Also has an excellent lake for fishing and canoeing, and the park has a swimming pool and ampitheater open in the summer.
