Powhatan State Park River Trail is a 1.4 mile moderately trafficked out and back trail located near Powhatan, Virginia that features a river and is good for all skill levels. The trail is primarily used for walking and nature trips and is best used from March until October. Dogs are also able to use this trail but must be kept on leash.
Portions of this trail are prone to flooding right after a heavy rain and may close temporarily. Marked perfectly, you can’t get lost (blue). The trail is wide enough to let others pass, it follows the river all the way to some big trees that overhang the water. Once you get to those, the trail ends, and you have to turn back to go back to the parking lot.
The trail is open again, but the day after a heavy rain part of it was flooded and impassable (the part right where it turns away from the river towards the gold dust trail). River level is quite high today! Otherwise it's a nice trail and was very quiet, flat and dry
Hiked w 20# Ruck. Dog was with. Campsites were nice and spaced. Trail was clean.
Dog barked. Big ups to the dude who said, "thanks for wearing a mask."
Flat and pretty. Completely shaded. Watch out for snakes; we saw a young copperhead. When you get to the end, you have the option of hiking inland, and catching part of the turkey trail (which is completely exposed) to get back to the river trail parking. This is when my family did kids age 8 and 10, and my puppy did fine.
Great hike with fam!! 3, 7, and 8 year old did great. Tiring, but amazing.
