One of the very pleasant trails i have tried. Mostly flat except couple of places. Most of the trail is on the riverside. Donation is based on honor system. Suggested donation is $2 per vehicle. You can also rent boats when the water is not high.

I spent the weekend nearby and hiked the direction towards Great Falls National Park yesterday so figured might as well check out this direction today. The visitor center area was more crowded than yesterday, with people grilling and blasting music and stuff that I did not see yesterday (tomorrow is Memorial Day, so no surprise that people are out partying). Despite that, the trail in this direction was not very populated (much less so than the trail in the other direction was yesterday). I didn’t hike the whole length due to the temps in the upper 80s. I hiked about 35 minutes in / halfway for the out and back. Still enjoyable. Pros: mostly shaded, not too crowded, lots of wildlife (several snakes, toads, salamanders, birds), pretty views of river much of the time, the parts further from the river are pretty forest parts, some fun up and down sections, not muddy in many spots despite storms last night, well marked Cons: some sections are kinda plain

Well marked trail with some decent inclines. Can see eagles nest on this hike which was neat.

Great short, moderate hike. The first half of the trail is very well maintained and there are plenty of signs to keep you on the trail. The second half is a bit more rugged and has a few steep climbs. Even though the parking lot for the area was full, the trail was still lightly trafficked. There are plenty of paths from the trail that lead down to the water. The views, the moderate hills, and having the trail to ourselves the majority of the time earns this trail four stars.

Definitely easy and flat for the first part but has some moderate climbs in the second half. A great little trail with some nice views of a quieter part of the Potomac
