Hiking

We hiked this today and saw two people coming off the trail when we arrived, but no one else all morning. It's a very peaceful, quiet, and beautiful hike. We went counterclockwise, and started out going down into the canyon. I think that section was rockier with more steps than the last section coming out of the canyon when you go in that direction. I agree with the previous post that the road going to the trail from the Salem side was a little intimidating, but we went through Cave Springs on the way home which seemed to be a wider road. We thought we were lost on the way there, but we finally found it, and it was worth it!

Beautiful trail! Well marked all the way through. Red trail was quick and easy. Blue trails, specifically the Canyon Trail, were more steep and demanding. The drive to/from Salem is pretty scary, but going to/from 220 was much less perilous. Nice and quiet. Enjoy.

Beautiful trails and views. Not too crowded either. Be careful pulling into the parking lot if you’re in a low car, you might drag.

No problems with trail. It was muddy at the very bottom across the creek. Well marked trail. Not too hard!

As of today — Feb 24 — no snow on the trail, good conditions! Road clear too. Beautiful hike, the whole loop! Well-maintained trail

Don’t go this time of year (Feb). Couldn’t get to the parking lot/trail. Road was awful (large branches everywhere). We tried to push through but it got worse as we went along until it got to the point where we couldn’t clear the branches and they were too big to be moved.

HikingGreat!Snow

We turned right at the kiosk, going counterclockwise. That side was not very snowy. The snow made it more difficult going back up the many switchbacks. Very much enjoy the cascades/waterfall and the sweet overlook, which is not far at all from the kiosk. We plan to do a morning hike and catch the sunrise. A narrow trail with not much room to pass, but also not many people on trail.

LOOP TRAIL IS OPEN. I just did this with a friend and it's beautiful, but icy I a few spots. Definitely needed my poles! It's easier to go clockwise, because it's a much longer and steeper incline. Narrow in places, both on the trail and the road getting there! Especially beautiful here when the rhododendron and mountain laurel are blooming in the spring.

Too icy to do the whole loop. Very slippery on the way down. I went to the overlook and came back. No one in the parking lot when I arrived around 1:00p. Several cars when I came back around 2:20p.

Nice trail, well maintained! Only passed 3 people, 2 leaving when I first started, and 1 as I was leaving. I went after snow had melted so there was a little mud, but all things considering it wasn’t too bad. Looking forward to going again the spring. I did the blue blaze trail, counterclockwise. Definitely recommend branching off for the overlook and for the cascade view. Pet friendly!

The best parts of this trail is low traffic! Only negatives are that it is down and up, so the hardest part is the way back and the views and scenery aren't the greatest.

Peaceful and great loop to enjoy on a leisurely afternoon or morning. There are a few zones marked off which added a little confusion but overall enjoyable for a 2h-2h30 hike. Passed 3 people on a Friday afternoon.

Great hike. Some narrow switchbacks. I wouldn’t recommend if leaves are wet. Today was blue skies and sunshine. Nice workout on the blue trail. Not too difficult but you’re hiking down and then back up. Definitely jump off at overlook spur - absolutely spectacular view which provides a nice place to take a little break! The drive up the mountain to the trailhead was also an experience! S curves and no guardrails! Definitely recommend!

also went counterclockwise, was absolutely gorgeous. No closures to the main trail, only an extension. There were a lot of leaves, which could make it tricky for kids. Didnt pass a lot of people. Absolutely gorgeous.

Counterclockwise is the way to go. I usually don't see other people here which is nice. A few good views, nice creek, easy hiking but still a good leg burn.

Terrible in the middle of the night. Trail hard to see at spots. Cascade trail closed. For full length of the loop, do overlook, then canyon trail and double back.

A well maintained trail through remnants of an old growth forest. It’s down and up and the return is a good workout. I love this hike!
