Getting There

Occoquan Reservoir is a 2,100-acre Fairfax Water Authority impoundment, which forms the boundary between Fairfax and Prince William counties. Fairfax County Water Authority manages Occoquan as a water supply impoundment, which serves residents of Fairfax County and the City of Alexandria, therefore there is no swimming allowed in the reservoir. The Upper Segment begins on free-flowing, tree-lined Bull Run, which widens as it joins the Occoquan River, opening to an expansive, freshwater lake formed by the Occoquan Reservoir dam.

There is parking available at the boat ramp/marina area. The Fountainhead marina has a bait shop, restroom facilities and a snack bar. The park website has complete current details and contact information http://www.nvrpa.org/park/fountainhead. There is also parking and restroom facilities at the Lake Ridge Community park.

To reach Fountainhead, take I-95 south, exit at Occoquan (160) and travel north on Rt. 123 approximately 5 miles. Turn left onto Hampton Road and drive 3 miles to the entrance on the left.

A great place to paddle. Went upstream to the 19 mile marker and back (upwind) in 3 hrs w a 20 min break to rest and eat. No strong currents, no rapids, very little boat traffic today.
