Enjoyable trail. This trail is narrow, winding, along the kanawha canal and you can see the james river as well as the train track running parallel to it. It has roots and rocks that form steps making for an adventurous experience that both hikers and bikers enjoy. Better to go during weekend when there are more people.

My favorite trail in Richmond. Beautiful views, challenging, and peaceful. We saw so much wildlife and loved the changes in scenery from woods, to wide open space, to the city views. Highly recommend.

Great hike, but the gorgeous day made for a large number of people who weren’t exactly socially distancing.

Rowan and I did this together. She was amazing! Hitting aggressive downhills, tight switchbacks and treacherous footballs all while screaming “woohoo!” all the way. I was proud and impressed. I know adults that couldn’t have done what she did. And this was her first time mountain biking!

If you’re visiting RVA and can only hike one trail-this is the one! It is a little steep at points but the views make it worth every step. You see the Hollywood Cemetery (a beautiful old cemetery) and high-up views of the James and the beautiful rocks as well as Belle Isle across the river. You also get a wonderful view of the Richmond skyline as well as the coal trains passing through and some kudzu forests. Since it is so accessible from different parts of the city, I would not recommend doing this trail at night, but during the day is totally fine. There are many places to stop along the way and take in the view, as well as swimming opportunities if you decide to detour down to Texas Beach.

I'm a big fan of this side of the river, sometimes the people can be a little unnerving, tho I try to live and let live, loud music and cigg smoke are not my faves to encounter on a hike, then again, this was Texan beach trail, not the Northbank trail.
