Went with the VTWC Hiking Group on a cold January morning. It was a nice trail with some nice views but not dramatic overlooks. There is just one section with some overgrowth. Loved the drive out through Clover Hollow. Nice rocky climb up the AT from SR 601.

Trail was easy to find. Off Virginia 601, take the A.T. East up a steep climb for a half a mile. The Johns Creek Mt. Trail goes off the A.T. to the left. The trail has places where there is no path or blaze and you have to scout to find the trail. Ate lunch on top overlooking Gap Mt. to the south-east. I was surprised by a large black bear sliding out of a tree twenty-five feet from where I was sitting. It took off down the ridge, I decided it was time to go back. On the way back, I again heard the tell tale sound of a bear sliding down a tree and then the thump of it hitting earth. I did not see this one, which worried me more. What a day.
