HikingGreat!

It was lovely to hike this in the winter as the rocks were nowhere near as crowded as in the regular season. The hike is not very difficult and the views are better with no foliage. A very pleasant trail with some beautiful scenic spots. I am not sure why it is rated as "hard" - I would rate "moderate".

Probably the only way I’ll ever do Humpback Rocks again! You get to avoid the crowds until the end, a more varied hike and the view from Humpback Mountain itself is superb too.

HikingGreat!

I walked it today and it was very hard. If you are not in shape don’t do it. I did not really how hard it was.

Very easy to find the trail via google maps, and a pretty moderate (not difficult) hike. Not very steep climbs, and very well marked trails.

Very nice hike with multiple beautiful viewpoints. Mostly shady and not too hot on this 81 degree day. I’d call it “moderate”, not “hard”, though trekking poles come in handy for some steep and rocky ups and downs. On the return, we saw a mountain lion on the access trail between the Appalachian Trail and the Humpback Rocks Picnic Area parking lot. It loped away from us down the trail towards the picnic area, and disappeared into the woods. No mistaking what it was.

Went this past weekend. Unfortunately I didn’t wear the right shoes for the terrain which cost me but I was still able to make the walk. It was hot but plenty of shade and fresh air. The view is beautiful once at the top of the rocks!

Did this one back in October, on a weekend. Go early or on a week day, it gets very crowded. The trail isn't too hard. I'd say moderately difficult at best

I drove 3.5 hours just to hike up to the Humpback Mountain top. Parking is easy to find. I was the first hiker at 8:15 am. Great views after about a mile from the parking/picnic area.

Hiking

Started at the Humpback Rocks Picnic area where there is plenty of parking if you get there earlier in the day. At 7am there were a few cars, when we got back a little after 11 the lot was slam full. This was in early September. Didn't see many folks until we got closer to Humpback Rocks where people park less than a mile away and visit for the view. The trail is challenging but I would rate it Moderate if you're in decent shape. Bring trekking poles and you'll be fine. The views along the trail weren't great because of foliage but I imagine once the leaves fall there's more to see.

This is my third time hiking this trail since June. It's just convenient for me - close to where I stay. I noticed after rains in July some parts of AT trail is very overgrown. I am 5'7", and grass is almost my height. I hiked it anyway, it is up and down with couple of good overlooks before Humpback rocks, good workout. I was pretty much alone today, just met one through hiker - it's cool.

The trail from the picinic ground to Appalachian trail has been overgrown and not maintained, we had to abandon our walk after less than a mile. After that, we drove north to Humpback Rocks trailhead parking and had a great hike.

Backpacking

Just hiked from Wintergreen Dr via AT to humpback rocks,(had rocks all to myself, thanks to gov shutdown) camped overnight off AT trail on east facing side. Rare warm temp. day/night in Jan.... Moderate to Hard trail, but worth the effort. Had about 20lbs of camping gear and water. Take water!!!
