High Knob Tower from High Knob Campground is a 2.5 mile lightly trafficked out and back trail located near Coeburn, Virginia that features a great forest setting and is rated as moderate. The trail is primarily used for hiking, camping, and nature trips. Dogs are also able to use this trail but must be kept on leash.
***Disregard the High Knob Observation Trail Map uploaded to AllTrails, it takes you to the tower’s parking lot. More accurately this should be Chief Benges Scout Trail which I have recorded******. This is a lightly trafficked 2 mile down and back that rolls through the Jefferson National Forest. There is a trail head off the main road heading up. I highly recommend this quiet and green trail. Note that the trail is thin and overgrown in some areas.
It was okay. All uphill on the way back. We expected that. The AllTrails map follows the paved road. The actual trail is this track.
Lots of flies. No swimming in High Knob Lake because if giardia. We packed in and wanted to spend the night but were told by the ranger (via phone) that they wouldn’t drink the water even if filtered. ????? Looks abandoned at the camping area. Kids did great. Pretty area.
