Chadwell gap Trailhead->Hensley Settlement and back

This trail is a lot of work and really not that much return in terms of features or views. It is steep and rocky. The settlement at the end is interesting, but you can’t get in to any of the buildings because they remain privately owned. All that being said, the hike is a good workout and there are some remains of old buildings, and also some nice rocks and rock features along the way. And, though we did the hike in winter, I image the area would be a nice hike in summer with the dense hardwood forests and it would likely provide an outstanding color show in the fall.

This is a really gorgeous hike. It’s 4 miles from the trailhead to the settlement, almost 2,000 feet elevation gain, with about 1.5 miles of the trail being very steep. It took us 1 hour 40 minutes to get to the top, and 1 hr 30 minutes to make the trip down. We hiked on November 16th and had beautiful sunny weather, but the air was cold and there was still some snow on the ground at the higher elevations. I recommend sturdy shoes with good grip - there are a lot of loose rocks - and taking warm clothes. The settlement is lovely, with picnic tables, wide-open grassy space, and interesting cabins and other structures to see. I highly recommend this hike!

Very rocky trail going up but worth it to get to the settlement. Will be going back and camping the area. Very nice camp grounds on top.

We came in via the Ridge Trail from White Rocks/Ewing Trail. Great day hike, we backpacked our stuff to the White Rocks Campsite and set up Friday, left our stuff there Saturday to go to Hensley Settlement. About 5.5 miles from the campsite to the settlement. We had the whole place to ourselves so we set up our hammock and ate lunch and relaxed in the sun for a few hours. Would love to see the place during the summer!

Definitely better trail than the one on the KY Side. Parking is much better. Have plenty of water in the winter because the spigot in Hensley Settlement is turned off after Nov 1st. Martins Fork cabin on top of Gibson Gap has running water nearby it and is easily access from the trail on top of the ridge.

I have done this hike two times now starting from the Chadwell Gap Trailhead in Virginia. Very tough hike on more natural terrain but it is totally worth it. The settlement is amazing and you can spend hours up there getting a feel for what life was like by exploring the grounds of the settlement. It’s about 2.5 miles to the base of the mountain with 1.5 mile incline hike up the mountain. From there you hit the ridge trail and take it about another 2ish miles to the settlement! High recommend doing it!

This is where my wife's family have their family reunion once a year. Breathtaking and very nice area. Get alot more history if you show up while the Reunion is going on. There's charts and people willing to talk to you about their family history. The apple trees stay loaded during the August months. Very nice and Breathtaking.

I came through by the chadwell gap trail. We backpacked too heavy making the trail much harder than it had to be, but still a challenging trail. the Hensley settlement is breathtaking though! gorgeous! oh, and be mindful of black bears!

Great hike on last of 2016. Very cold, windy, and snowy at the Settlement. Beautiful.

I visited Hensley Settlement a few times several years ago, by vehicle and by foot. It seemed very long and steep but exploring the settlement at the top made it well worth the hike.

we hiked from chadwell gap parking lot to the settlement. the hike was hard going up lots of rocks on the way to chadwell gap. It was very beautiful day sunny no clouds. no water crossing seen. the settlement was empty. all the cabins were locked. lot of history to know about. I will definitely come back.

This is a great trail to hike just if not just for the end result which is the Hensley Settlement. It is like most of the trails in this area in that they difficult in the beginning and end because of the elevation gained. It is definitely worth the hike beautiful place especially in the fall.
