Parking at MP 84.4 on the Skyline Drive. Head South on the Trayfoot Mtn Trail/BlackRock Hut Rd about 1 mile to the Blackrock Summit. This hilltop consists of a rocky, talus slope with vistas of the southwest. Pick up the AT at the base of the Blackrock, and continue south on the Trayfoot Mountain Trail. The trial descends and rises gently, with some exposed areas to the north. The summit of Trayfoot is about 3/4 mile from Blackrock, offering no substantial views. Just past the peak, the trail intersects with the Furnace Mtn Trail. Bear right (NW) onto the Furnace Mtn Trail. The trail descends rather steeply for the next mile, then ascends and descends until reaching the Furnace Mtn Summit spur at ~ 2 miles from the Trayfoot summit. Take the 1/4 mile spur to the top. Although the Furnace Mtn Peak is 500 ft lower than Trayfoot, the views offer a more personal experience of the valley below, and Austin Mountain to the North. The sandstone rock here is notably different from the blackened quartz rock peak of Blackrock. Retrace the trail back to the Blackrock Summit parking. You may want to take the AT section from Blackrock to the parking area for a slightly different trail.
