6 miles slow up climb. Not much water along the trail.

I would say moderate to strenuous hike although not technical. Make sure you take water or at least purifying materials for the rain water available at the Fulhardt Knob refuge. Enjoy being outside...

HikingGreat!IcySnow

Perfect winter hike! I'd rate this probably a 3 if it was summer. The lack of foliage made it perfect. The parking lot had about an inch of snow but by the time I got to the shelter I had easily 3-4. I could see every direction and the lack of leaves gave a perfect snowy hike. Decent workout for the mileage. Definitely save this for a Fall/Winter/Early Spring hike.

This is a really nice trail because the elevation gain is divided into sections that alternate with some fairly flat sections. There is one bald near the beginning that has a nice view. At the top there isn't much view because of the trees but on this winter day we could see quite a bit. I only passed 2 other people the whole time on a Sunday morning.

This is an easily accessible trail that provides a good workout, but not many views. The first couple of miles through pasture are the most scenic parts of this trail, particularly the knob at the beginning. After that, the hike is mostly solitude and nature until you get to the shelter. The high point of the trail is the knob in the pasture at the trail's outset. On the return hike, we lingered here for 20-30 minutes to catch a beautiful sunset over the mountains. That alone made this hike more than worthwhile.

Lovely meandering isolated trail. Freezing at crosswinds today. Beautiful views throughout

HikingGreat!

Absolutely beautiful trail! The trailhead is easy to find and the variety is wonderful. Lovely woods, a field, and some stream crossings. The trail is very well marked and easy to follow. The views are very pleasant - though nothing spectacular, there are some very pretty sights through the trees and from the field. I plan to go prepared to camp in the nice campsite/shelter at the top.

HikingGreat!

What a great trail! I loved the open field at the start. I had been to the shelter on Fullhardt before. By hiking up from the opposite direction beginning at a pull off along Mountain Pass rd. This way (from route 11) was so much nicer. Beautiful forest with surprising views at your back the whole time. No views coming from the other way. Whatsoever. Granted the foliage has dropped a bit allowing more vision. But, was surprised at just how far you could see and encompassing different sides of the ridgeline.

Nice hike with varied terrain- some pasture, a few streams, mature forest traverses, and a shelter with a working cistern at Fulhardt’s Knob. No particular vistas, though pretty enough. Only saw two other hikers.

Great trail. Easy to find. Easy parking. As far as trails go (along the AT), there was not a lot to see; but still nothing wrong with it. We enjoyed it and enjoyed the stop at the shelter to eat a snack and head back! We saw a lizard, a handful of box turtles, and stopped to enjoy the sun-ripened blackberries on the way back.

HikingBlowdown

This is an excellent hike, and is steadily uphill almost the entire way to the shelter. The meadow you reach shortly after crossing the tracks and hiking through the Woods a bit offers a fantastic view of the surrounding hills. Gorgeous. Lots of trail variety, and just beautiful mountain laurel today. We saw a pair of scarlet tanagers, a toad, a red eft, a fence lizard, and two box turtles. And two deer. Shelter was clean, we sat at the table for our snack. Hike back to the car only took 1.5 hrs. Moderate hike, and a great time. Good workout. Saw 4 other hikers. Beautiful weather today. Start early- hiking back up that big hill on the way out is really hot. We did encounter one massive blowdown, but we stepped over it carefully.

Easy trail but definitely not the best one I’ve done on the AT. The best part was the field that you come to near the beginning. The shelter at the top is a good place to rest but the views are underwhelming.

The shelter was in good shape and seemed to be kept up well. Good to see no immature hikers come in and vandalize or leave trash at the shelter. There are no views really except through some tree lines while on the trail. I brought a few snacks up with me and relaxed and enjoyed the shelter. I suggest you do the same. The only thing I couldn't figure out is according to my GPS it stated that Fulhardt Knob was about a mile or so back prior to the shelter coming from Troutville? I never saw another trail break off from the main AT trail, so im not sure where this was?

This is a nice hike through some varied terrain near the beginning (trail passes through woods and meadows and some private land) and then ascends into upland forest. There are a lot of nice views, but no wide open vistas. I hiked it on a beautiful Sunday in early November and only passed three small groups. One of these was a volunteer couple with the Roanoke Appalacian Trail Club heading up to the shelter to perform trail maintenance. The trail is in excellent shape.
