Pretty easy trail, a few heart rate lifting spots. Lots of varieties of mushrooms, two ancient vehicles that look they've been sitting here since the 50's, which was pretty nifty. Some nice views, very few people. Nothing super special, but an enjoyable hike I'd recommend for sure.

The horseshoe directional signage can be a little confusing so it is easy to get off trail and onto the mountain bike course. Very few people once you get past the first mile.

The trail was decent enough with some parts that will get you heart rate up. The views of the Occoquan Reservoir were pretty and the walk in the woods with squirrels bounding by and woodpeckers rapping away was peaceful. I gave it 3 stars because the trail markings need major improvement. At the start, the blue horseshoe marked trail crisscrosses all over itself. Combine that with dry creek beds, washouts and trees spray painted with black paint like they were trying to fix a marking mistake and you get a trail that is hard to follow. At 1.5-2 miles in you will come down a hill passing by an old pickup truck. You’ll come to a signpost with blue going to the right and orange going left. Go left following the orange down to the Occoquan Reservoir. Sticking to blue will take you off trail and you’ll have to hike back up the hill when you figure it out. At the bottom of the trail near the reservoir if you quietly go off trail and walk to the water’s edge you may catch sight of a Bald Eagle like I did. There were one or two more tricky turns on my way back in. Make sure your phone is charged and your AllTrails app is running for this hike.

Great trail and well marked, followed the map to a T and my Apple Watch read 5.6 miles as well. Wish there was more wildlife; however, the old cars and river views were worth it! Only passed about 4 other groups on a Saturday morning which was nice from a social distancing aspect.

Signs are a little hard to follow. You will get lost without a map

Fun trail but the river in the middle was disappointing, I was under the Impression there would be a shore line where my dog could get in the water but I saw no such thing. Lots of up and down if you have a dog make sure it doesnt pull or you risk being pulled down

Great trail, follow the blue then red markers and back to blue (horseshoes). I made the mistake of also following the yellow/white markers thinking it would loop back around - don’t make my mistake. Stick to the blue and red.

Definitely recommend! You don’t get much of the river but I’d you take a break and stop, it’s worth it. I only saw four people my entire 2 hour hike. The drive up is nice too!

Great hike and sparsely populated. Saw maybe 7 groups the whole time on a nice weekend at around 10:30am. Good trail conditions and parking available off street right at the trailhead.

Great trail! Didn’t start recording right away and also got off course and and to take a shortcut to get back on the trail at a point where the trails almost were parallel.

Not a bad trail. Not as busy as some of the others in the area which was nice. Definitely nice to get to and walk along the river for a small portion of it.

Great trail to hike on a Saturday morning in April during the Covid19 quarantine. Surprised not many folks out here and those I saw were respectful of social distancing. Followed blue horseshoes to red horse shoes to orange horseshoes and back to blue. Was so quiet and peaceful especially when I got to the water and had a short lunch break. This trail is a gem will definitely come again with my pup.

Great hike. The blue equestrian Trail was more flat. The red equestrian Trail had more hills. Hard to find the first loop originally. Beautiful views the lake. No parking lot. You just park on the side the road.
