Forest Road #283 is a 1.9 mile lightly trafficked out and back trail located near Big Stone Gap, Virginia that features a great forest setting and is good for all skill levels. The trail is primarily used for hiking and running.
The trail goes all the way till the top of the mountain. All in all it is 6.2 miles that leads to a remnants of a fire tower and broadcasting antenna. It is not marked need to take a left turn once you complete this listed section to complete the rest of the hike. The hike is listed as easy but it is not. There is lot of going up to reach the top there is ?1700 ft difference to the top. There are nice springs and beautiful rhododendrons on top beyond the first 3 miles of the hike. The trail is well demarcated and well kept . We hiked it last wk end. Did not see anybody on the trail. We did not see any bears but we were told that there are bears seen on this trail. We did see white tail deer.
it's okay, this said 1.9miles there more than that! we walked 2.5miles and still more we decided turn around n will try next time more dry weather will be better. path a lot of muddy and overgrown . just see full of forest wondering what look like at the end
Over all good trail. The trail was set up as a nature trail, since then the USFS has has tried to upkeep the hole thing but is only able to do about .5 miles in. One or twice a year some will cut it back. This trail goes up into the mtns but it is not maintained.
