As others have said, the majority of this trail is out in the open so you either want to go early or a cloudy/partly sunny day. Today was partly sunny and cooler and just perfect! I really like the loop part of the trail as it’s a mix of crushed rock, grass, and dirt as well as a mix of scenery (field and woods). You can hear RT3 traffic and see houses some of the time, but it still feels peaceful. I enjoy the wildflowers, butterflies, dragonflies, and birds.

Loose gravel. Prefer a packed path due to ankle issues. Clean and e easy to navigate though.

Nice easy trail. Some shade but mostly sunny paths. During the summer definitely do early morning or take water with you if you plan to do the entire trail!!

Nice, easy walk with lots of history. If you go in the summer, I would recommend going early in the morning or just before dusk because about 85% of the trail is unshaded, and the sun is unforgiving. Trail is well-marked. It’s a little confusing at the end as you cross Montpelier, but just look at the app map and you’ll be fine.

Most of the trails are a soft gravel. Your foot sinks in a bit which makes walking tiring after a few miles. Little more work required to walk. On the west side of the trail, the trail is made of larger gravel irregular stones which can be a bit rough on the ankles or feet. Also most of this trail is exposed to the sun. That’s the down side. On the positive side it’s a very peaceful walk where you will learn a lot about local history. Worth the time. Looking forward to doing it again.

Good walk with historical relevance. Not a lot of shade on it.

The field to the west smelled like it has been recently fertilized. It was a drizzly morning which may have amplified the smell. As expected with a drizzly day the grass portion of the trail was wet but not muddy.

There were portions of the trail that were very wet and muddy, due to rail fall yesterday.

This is a relatively flat trail with gravel. The farthest west portion of the trail is more hilly and predominately dirt.

Long, rolling hills and pretty views. When the crops are growing, it’s almost like walking through a corn-walled maze.
