Trails were okay, but lacked the beauty of some of Virginia's parks. Coyote Run is mostly through fields. Enjoyed the walk, although I found trails were not marked as well as other state parks I have visited recently.

HikingMuddy

Visited on a very warm November day, very muddy and wet. I prefer wooded hikes and this one is pretty much open on grass beside trees for the majority of the time. It leads to my favorite trail of the park — Pine Trail.

A nice, mostly flat, trail through several fields plus a few jaunts in and out of the woods. Probably really nice on a winter day when you want some sun.

I have no idea where this trail is! Followed the GPS to where the trailhead was supposed to be, but nope. Read someone else’s review that said they took Big Woods Trail which was supposedly to take me to Turkey Trail then to Gold Dust Trail and then onto Coyote Run Trail! No dice there either. Beautiful trails in this park, but I would definitely suggest getting a trail map from the gate.

Relaxing spring/fall hike, but would not want to do it in the heat of summer. To get to Coyote Run Trail, we parked at the main parking area (next one beyond the playground parking lot). We decided to start on Big Woods Trail, an open, mowed trail used a lot by equestrians. This adds on about 0.5 mile each way (out and back) (3.7+0.5+0.5). Big Woods leads to Turkey Trail, which leads to Gold Dust Trail, which gets you to Coyote Run Trail. Most of this hike is on open, mowed meadow, along the perimeter of the forest. Three short sections foray into the beautiful hardwood forest for some limited shade. Great for dogs and kids alike. We chose Coyote Run loop in the counter-clockwise direction. We discovered an old cemetery at the end of Coyote Run as we came up over the last knoll - marked by a wooden split rail fence and more closely by a wrought-iron fence. Three visible markers exist but someone is conducting an inventory of many other primitive graves, marked only by upright, honed stones. There are three AMAZINGLY HUGE oak trees in the cemetery area that must be upwards of 200 yrs old. Heard lots of birds. Lots of signs that deer graze but we didn't catch glimpse of any turkeys that are surely enjoying this park. And the Cherry millipedes are out right now - please watch your step! Some mud as it rained pretty heavily the week before we hiked. Saw several small packs of people but all were spread out and not getting too close as to intrude on our family time on a beautiful partly sunny day.

A really lovely, open trail with views of the fields, hills, and woods. It was very quiet and serene. The little cemetery off the trail was a nice place to rest (there's also a huge tree along the cemetery trail that was quite a sight). Saw several deer along the way, too! There's a sign in the parking lot about bear safety, and although I didn't see any signs of bears, it's a good thing to be aware of (especially if you're hiking alone). If following the All Trails map, the trailhead marker at the parking lot does not have Coyote Run Trail listed on it; you will start by following part of Turkey Trail onto the Gold Dust Trail that will finally lead you onto the Coyote Run Trail after you cross Powhatan State Park Rd. It's a fairly straight shot, though it doesn't hurt to keep an eye on your app until you reach the Coyote Run Trail markers.

This is not a hiking trail. only good for horses and bikes. Trail follows the edge of farm fields and rarely enters the forest that borders the entire trail. If you like hiking in the open with nothing to see, this ones for you!

First to Review

This is my first attempt at this fairly new trail. I took a wrong turn at the start due to some confusing signage. The trail is poorly marked; basically, it’s marked at the start/finish, and that’s it. I had to depend on evidence left from previous trail users.
