Backpacking

The AT portion of the trip was well worth it, finding the connector that brought us to the base of bushy mountain was rough. Also, the peak of bushy mountain was a sore disappointment for hiking.

Lots of insects at top in Early April. Tons! Great views though.

First off-BRING BUG SPARY! The gnats were unbearable. The entire hike was spent swatting bugs. The hike was half the McAfee knob hike...so if you have the time and energy go to the summit! Pretty views overall and an easy 4 miles.

Always excellent. Parking was plentiful, even on a Saturday mid-day, though it being January was likely a factor. Although I tend to prefer the fire road, the AT down off the ridge was best to avoid the cold winds today. Extra .2 mile to the intersection and a little more technical footing if you go that way.

Hike was fun, view is always nice - but this trail gets CROWDED. we went for a sunrise hike today and only saw a handful of people but if you're heading up on a nice weather day be prepared to deal with an overcrowded parking lot, a busy trail, and taking turns to get that iconic McAfee picture. When we hiked this in Sept we counted 200 people before we hit the AT/fire road intersection. also, be warned that the they are starting to tow cars that are illegally parked. Overall, a nice hike whether you take the AT or fire road up, but plan ahead and aim for a weekday or a really early start to avoid the crowds and help keep the trails healthy.

HikingGreat!

We took our 4 kids, ages 8-11 and went up via the Firebrand Rd Trail and when it met the AT, we took it back down. Kids don’t normally hike but they loved it, except one who complained the last 2-3 miles. Beautiful hike and can’t wait to take them to McAfee Knob one day

HikingMuddy

Took the AT up to Mcafee Knob and the fire road back down. The trail up was pleasant, though heavily trafficked and I was a bit disappointed by the amount of people that did not yield to those coming up. The fire road down had very few people on it and it had some views on both sides from the trees. The leaves are slick so take your time down!! The views at the top were excellent and worth the trip. Parking is an absolute mess. Be cautious of parking on 311. Where my recording starts is where we parked which was about 1/4 down 311. There were a few parking spots on the side of the road but were full. After those, there was a dirt road turn off that opened up into an empty grass lot with no “no parking” or “no trespassing” signs. We parked there and did not get ticketed or towed there.

As someone else mentioned, the trail on AllTrails ends abruptly on the fire road. There is no Catawba Mountain scenery to see here. We decided to walk another mile to where the fire road meets the Appalachian Trail and come back down the AT. The fire road is not very exciting. There was one rock that you could see out from but otherwise you’re just walking through a wide path in the woods.

this route is a fire road. nice and wide. relatively flat and even. easier than hiking the AT if you're heading toward McAfee's knob but not quite as exciting. works great if you got kids or animals

Linked trail ends abruptly. Would recommend adding a mile and looping back on the Appalachian trail. Linked trail is easy, wide, and well established. Once you get over to the Appalachian it gets more interesting.

HikingGreat!

AllTrails’ maps for this trail stopped in middle of McAfee Knob trail. Where AllTrails’ map said Catawba Mountain, there was NOTHING there. So we hiked to McAfee Knob, 3rd time in a month. McAfee Knob is a great hike, but we were looking for a new trail and this info at least in part erroneous on this App.

A beautiful trail that certainly was a challenge to us flatlanders. I think moderate difficulty describes it well but the surroundings and view from the top is worth the trek.

Car park was full even at 7.30am on a Saturday morning. Beware not to park along route 311. On our way back, we saw cars being towed away. The hike itself was wonderful. The elevation gain was gradual but still a vigorous workout throughout. We took the AT up and the fire road down. View at the Knob was amazing and people were considerate enough to let others take turn at taking photos at the magic spot.
