The Eastern Parking Lot (215 Afton Depot Lane, Afton VA 22920) will be closed for construction from April 12 to May 4. Nelson County is expanding the eastern parking lot. Western Trailhead Parking Lot will remain open, as will the tunnel. Western Trailhead address: 483 Three Notched Mountain Hwy, Waynesboro VA 22980. Limited spots on this side (20), it is recommended to arrive early and visit on a weekday. ***** Although only 2.25 miles long, the Blue Ridge Tunnel Trail has plenty of wow factor. After nearly 20 years of effort by Nelson County, the rail-trail passes through a 4,700-foot tunnel bored through the Blue Ridge Mountains of central Virginia, originally constructed between 1850 and 1858. Spanning nearly a mile long, it was the longest tunnel in America at the time of its completion. As the tunnel isn’t lit, visitors should bring a headlamp or flashlight for the experience. The eastern trailhead is located at 215 Afton Depot Lane in Afton, VA and the western trailhead is located at 483 Three Notched Hwy, Waynesboro, VA. More parking at the western trailhead, though the trail is much steeper on this side with a 19% grade in one section.

HikingGreat!

Amazing adventure! A nice hike through history. The trail is in good condition, the tunnel is very interesting. Definitely bring a flashlight so you can not only see where you are going but to see some of the cool features inside.

Gravel walking path. Tunnel portion of the walk was really cool! Bring a flashlight, you will need it!

Arriving late afternoon, parking wasn’t an issue at the East Trailhead. (Lot expansion is planned beginning next week.) The tunnel is an engineering marvel and worth the trip. Nice and cool inside - also, you may get dripped on by water seeping through the rocks. Highly recommend!

Hike was nice. I came from the West Trailhead. It's a medium downward slope with a few steeper grades until you reach the tunnel. You'll need at least a low cellphone flashlight to clearly see the ground, but a good flashlight to really appreciate the walls and ceiling of the tunnel. I cut my light off about halfway through to take it all in. From the East Trailhead its completely flat and only a half a mile to the tunnel. It runs along the new railroad track. there are several informational boards on it's construction and renovation.

We parked at the west trailhead after finding the east trailhead parking lot full. Beautiful weather on an Easter Monday. We started leisurely walking at 9:50 and got back to car around noon. You could park at either end and just go through the tunnel and back or walk to each trailhead for fun. the west end is much steeper with switch backs. Parking is a nightmare. When we returned to the west parking lot (capacity 20), there were almost 50 cars parked anywhere they thought they could fit.

We started on the West Trail Head. When you get off i64, head towards Waynesboro, and you will find the entrance on the left. There is more elevation changes (it gets steep) getting to the tunnel by the West side than the East side. The path is very well kept and it is wide enough for multiple people. The tunnel is dark, so bring a flashlight. It was about 40 degrees outside when we went, so the tunnel was way colder. I recommend taking gloves, since your hands will be outside your pockets holding a flashlight. Your hands can get really cold. It was a great experience overall, with a lot of information diagrams on the path East of the tunnel.

Flat walk through a cool tunnel! Very crowded on a Saturday and parking was limited. If you plan on getting there any time after 9:30, you will have trouble parking. We had better luck at the west trail head for later parking. Dogs will get muddy, so bring towels, and the tunnel is very dark, so a flashlight or headlamp is necessary.

This was a fun little hike/walk! We hiked from the west trail head to the east and back (approximately 4.5 miles total round trip). It is a bit steep in parts from the parking to the tunnel on the west side but nothing major. Saw lots of families with kids and dogs. This trail is new but already popular. When we left at 1pm on a Sunday, the 20 spots at the west trailhead were full and people were parking along the side so make sure to arrive early!

HikingGreat!

Went around 11am on a Saturday. We had to wait about 15 minutes for a parking spot in the small Afton Depot lot.. It was busy since it was a nice day, many people were not wearing face masks, many dogs on leashes. The trail is very smooth and an easy hike to the tunnel. It is very dark in the tunnel so remember to bring a flashlight. This was a great hike that I highly recommend. I will definitely go again but probably during the week to try and avoid the busyness.

Easy hike. Gravel or paved all the way. Bit of of a steep slope on the west end. Fair number of folks for a Friday morning.
