This is an amazing trail for the entire family. It is labeled easy, but I’d call it moderate for children or out of shape individuals. The trail leads to an unbelievable view and some cool features. Definitely a must for the family or for anyone that wants to hike but isn’t prepared to go very far in. Bring some lunch, and enjoy the views while you dine :)
*Not stroller or wheelchair friendly :(

Don’t let the short distance fool you, this trail is great! The rock scramble at the top is pretty awesome and the views are just spectacular! A great place to watch the sun go down!

The summit was a bit crowded at the top, but understandably so for a beautiful Saturday in October :) The hike was not overly strenuous for an absolutely gorgeous view.

Great trail. Start to the right and loop around. Wear gloves to scramble on rocks.

Fairly easy. Some grade at times and a few rocks under foot. Did it with a 7 and 6 year old. Beautiful view.

Coming from south there is a very similar trailhead and parking lot. Make sure you start at the “summit” parking lot else you can walk a couple of miles on the east side and the same distance or more to the west — none of which have a view or cross the AT!

Amazing view from the top. Me and my 3 year old did it easily in just under an hour. Don’t climb the rocks, the official guide book states this will kill hundreds of
Years of lichen on the rocks with just one footstep! Highly recommend.

Short and easy. Climb on and To the top of the talus boulder field for summit views. My kids (10 and 13) did it to get out of the car and stretch out legs on our way deeper into Shenandoah and they loved it.

Great view at summit and rewarding for a short hike. Fair amount of traffic.

It was a surprisingly great trail that has a rock scramble that allows for a bit longer and less traversed hike to meet back with Trayfoot trail. Took three kids and a dog, all loved it and it was pretty easy. Hawskbill is my favorite Skyline Drive hike but this is a close second.

Quick hike, awesome view at the end. A 360 view if the mountains. Even took our 20 month old in a off road stroller but was a little rocky going up some parts for that but still worth it. When you get to the AT stay to the two right paths and you’ll make a loop back. Happy hiking!

This week of clouds finally parted to give us an amazing view from above the clouds. There is also an earthcache here for those familiar.

We did this as part of a 13 mile loop that included the AT, Furnace Mountain and Blackrock Summit. Going counterclockwise and starting from the Blackrock Summit parking area, we went down the AT to take a left along the ridges down to the fire road. From there we went up to Furnace Mtn, then on to Trayfoot. As Trayfoot is not much to look at, we continued to the Blackrock Summit Spur trail and saved the best views for the end of our trek. Great 360 degree views from the top and the rock formations are fun to walk around on. We saw a "rock" guitar and met a huge black bear on the trail down to the parking area. Great trail offering lots of variety.

Loved this hike. Ends at an outcrop of rocks perfect for the view. If you're really adventurous you can climb the rocks to the top of the outcrop for a great panoramic view.

Nice hike through a pretty cool rock field with classic Shenandoah views of the mountains and valley off to the side. Really pretty fall colors.

Another way to go is to stop at the Blackrock Gap parking lot and follow the AT up, makes for a little longer hike and you pass the Blackrock Shelter which is interesting to visit, Dad was hut-keeper there in the 90's
