Park to the left/behind the visitor center and begin at blue and yellow trail blaze, eventually yellow drops and you are on blue only, you’ll blend with the green castle gorge trail in the middle and then you drop off that too. Nice mixture of wooded trails, old road beds, and open field.

Excellent hike with a variety of terrain and views. The field crossings show signs of cattle however didn’t see any livestock. Recommend this trail if you have a free afternoon and would like to see incredible views from both sides of the parkway.

Great hike with some awesome views and some interesting cow pasture walking. Reminded us of our international hiking. We highly recommend it!

Nice hike. Not too strenuous. Interesting route over a fence and through a pasture..watch out for the multitude of cow evidence! Nice fall views.

Beautiful trail! Wasn’t too strenuous but a few uphills, beautiful views/overlooks at a few different points. It was a little confusing at first because we didn’t read the legend (oops). Make sure to turn left with the blue arrow instead of following straight with yellow arrow, and then once you cross the blue ridge parkway, follow the green/blue.

Nice, fun trail to take the whole family on. Relatively little elevation changes. Walking through the cow pasture was fun for the kids. You’ll hear the road noise from the Blue Ridge Parkway most of the time, but a fun hike, especially if you’re camping at Rocky Knob.

This is a great hike, very doable for beginners. The views are spectacular, especially in the fall. Most of the trail is through the woods, but at one point, you must cross a road, climb a small step ladder over a fence, and pass through a cow field to cross another fence back into the woods on the other side. Very cool, nothing like I’ve ever seen before. Makes for a great morning adventure.

Awesome little loop for beginners! A few uphill spots, but mostly walking. Lots to see, with many different views along the way.

A nice, quick loop close to the parkway. The markers in the cow pasture were hard to see at times but easy to follow once located. I went on a Saturday in October and it was pretty crowded. There is a wooded picnic area and bathrooms I used after my hike.

Followed the trail clockwise. Amazing views right at the beginning. Then through a cow pasture, so watch out for poos. You can hear some traffic from the road (which you’ll cross twice). Overall good hike and good views.

My wife and I came to Floyd to escape from the anxiety of the city in DC during the pandemic. The town is lovely ACD there are some great trails in the area. The Black Ridge Trail was a lovely 3-mile jaunt with lots to see on the trail. If you start counter clockwise, you’ll end your hike with some lovely views down into the valley. Disappointingly we didn’t see any bears, but maybe next time. Floyd county is known to have more bears than people, after all!

Nice short trail that has some spectacular views at times. It was a good escape from the heat. Part of it does traverse pasture land but even that is beautiful to me. Climbs a couple of short, well built ladders to get over the fences. Mabry Mill is close by so be sure and stop by for some nice photos at the mill.

Easy and quick 2.8 mile loop. Great view from the ridge once you cross over the parkway. Then you spend about a third of the trail walking through cow pastures. (Less interesting and lots more sun!) The final third (if you complète loop in clockwise direction) is through a nice wooded area. I completed in 1 hour 10 minutes that included a few photo ops and water breaks along the way. Best view of the mountains and valley is actually from the overlook parking lot just across the street!

Start from the parking lot and take trail to left, down next to brook. Loop is better this way, as you can take in gorgeous views of the ridge coming down on your right hand side.

I guess I’ll be the contrarian on this trail. Hiked the upper portion along the gorge a couple of times and the ridge line has some great views, but the lower portion...it’s a farm road. It might as well be the woods behind my parents house. I don’t recommend this trail. there are plenty of other ones in the area that are better.
