Enter East side of Drive, Jarman's Gap road and go right (south) at first intersections with the AT. Ascend Calf mountain for 1. 5 miles, until reaching Calf Mtn cabins spur. Spur trail is about .5 mi each way. Return to AT, passing peak of Calf Mountain, followed a clearing with views at 3 miles. Continue on AT south, passing through an old apple orchard, descending to the Skyline Drive. Cross the road at Beagle Gap, and ascend Bear Den Mtn to reach the peak. At the summit there are communication towers, and tractor seats placed there by the previous owners of Royal Orchards. Passing the towers, find the gravel road that circles the mountain, intersecting with the AT.

Trail was okay for the hike to the top of Bear Den Mountain. View was okay. However, the ticks were REALLY bad at the top and in the field near the parking lot. We sat down for a snack and had to pack up and leave because the ticks were crawling over us. So, if your going out soon, be tick prepared.

This was a nice quiet hike. It’s great if you want to put in base miles or building up to do longer hikes. Not a challenging climb. Calf Mountain summit is a great view on a clear day. The hike doesn’t have many views and mostly shaded and in the woods. There is a detour as soon as you get to the trail head that extends the hike. I recommend keeping the All Trails app open to make sure that you are staying on the recommended trail. There are many paths/openings that can be deceiving. Some of the path is overgrown and makes it seems that you are going the wrong way. Our total mileage was 9.5 with the detour and visiting the Calf Mountain Shelter. We have a Vizsla and she enjoyed every bit of the hike.

Little Calf Mountain is the highlight of this trip. It is worth the 1+ mile hike to get to the summit (which is just an open field). The views are great and it is also a really great spot for star gazing on clear nights.

Not too strenuous, but also not too eventful - one decent view of the "summit" and another under some powerlines but that's about it. It's decent if you're on this side of Shenandoah but you can find much better.

This trail is a very easy and out and back hike. It does have one pretty meadow about halfway through the hike with a very pretty overview but the rest of this hike is just to a pile a of rocks people have stacked and that is it. It’s easy if you’re looking for a quick hike and nothing else but not much to it. However the view at the meadow truly does make it worth it.
