BackpackingGreat!

Went from Hog Camp Gap over Cole Mountain, then Bald Knob Down to Long Mountain Wayside. Coming off Cole mountain you can see sections of the old trail and the remnants of an old forest fire. I know the Forest Service has done control burns out at this area before and has left some interesting sites. THis section of the AT is only 6 miles from Hog Camp Gap over Cole Mountain, Bald Knob, and down to Long Mountain Wayside. AllTrails has the mileage incorrect.

HikingBlowdown

Due to a late start, my planned hike to Cole Mountain was shortened to Bald Knob. Lots of fallen trees and branches due to previous week's ice and snow, and there were a couple of volunteers trying to clear the trail. However the area was very dry with very little mud or streams. The AT up to Bald Knob is not as steep as I feared (the 1.0-1.5 mile section is the hardest); it is simply a very persistent climb with 2000 ft over 2.5 miles. Surprisingly, the trail was relative smooth and not very rocky, which made for a easier hike and explains the popularity with trail runners. View wise, it is probably better in the winter months due to less foliage on the trees. Could not find any markings at the peak. Did descent a little past Bald Knob and it was colder with a few snow patches trying to tempt the sun. Decided to turn around to avoid nightfall.

Hiking

Started after 5 pm. Solo day hiking. Got dark long before summit. New moon so very little light. AllTrails says you are off trail a couple of times when you aren’t. Turned around a half mile from summit to hike down. Easy trail to follow, even in dark if you have a headlight.

Just to be clear, this is a 5.2 one-way hike, so 10.4 out and back. The description is misleading.

This is a tough mountain! Small overlook at top which is nice! We did this as a backpacking trip to cole mountain loop and mount pleasant loop! Nice way to add on some miles and extra challenge!
