Austin Mountain Trail is a 7.7 mile moderately trafficked out and back trail located near Grottoes, Virginia that features beautiful wild flowers and is rated as moderate. The trail offers a number of activity options and is best used from March until October. Dogs are also able to use this trail but must be kept on leash.

Challenging trail. There are a lot of trails that start around here so it’s easy to get confused. I ran this, but I had set out to do something else that started around there. The first couple of miles are very steep. The rocks are between softball and soccer ball size, and they’re very loose. If you’re running this be very careful going up and down that section. Once you get past the scrambles, the trail becomes much more like bike single track. There are some nice ups and downs on the way to the trail post. Solid leg workout and cardio, but nothing that requires any skill.

Awesomely rugged trail on the initial couple miles up. In late fall with leaves covering them makes it extra challenging especially since many of them are loose. Most of the rocks are mid-sized/smaller so it's not like there is actual rock scrambling involved...just more like walking on very large gravel. The rock field openings and ridge-like feature of this trail allow to see out toward the mountains most of the way up. Once you past the last rocky portion of the trail on the ascent, the rest feels like a simple stroll (until the return down). There isn't anything to see at the end of this route since it just ends upon intersecting with Rockytop trail. If you were to continue north on Rockytop trail, it leads to Lewis Peak trail which ends on a summit with excellent views (though this turns the hike into 14miles instead of 7.5).

I thoroughly enjoyed the trail - makes for a great short distance training run/hike particularly the steep ascent for the first couple of miles and later the steep and very fast descent (if you are so inclined) take a quick look at the elevation profile to get a sense of the climb. As others have said this trail has lots of rocks - it seemed to me that hundreds upon hundreds of dump trucks dumped rocks on the side of the mountain at various intervals - a really neat natural effect of nature doing its thing. Plenty of fantastic views but you must be paying 100% attention where you’re placing your feet if running through the rocky sections, else you’ll surely hit the deck. I usually have my Garmin tracking heart rate and such but didn’t have it on this trail so I periodically stopped the fast climb to check my heart rate on the ascent to keep from over exertion. I highly recommend this trail.

The parking is located about a mile from the true trailhead. Just walk down the flat fire road until you see the cement marker on the left. That next mile (mile 2) goes pretty much straight uphill and is a great cardio workout. Around mile 3, it gets very rocky. It’s not for those with weak ankles! Around mile 4, it’s levels out and becomes an easier stroll. The turnaround point is just a cement marker. It’s nothing fancy. Overall, I’m glad to have spent some time on this mountain but it lacks views (there’s only a couple of spots) and I don’t really prefer a hike out and turnaround as much as a loop. If you’re looking for a good workout and don’t care so much about views, this would be good for you.

The first half of the hike is difficult. It's a steep climb for a couple of miles, much of it on loose rocks so wear proper shoes. Make sure you're in very good shape or you'll be stopping every thirty yards to catch your breath like I was! Not much to write home about as far as views go compared to other trails in the area (and the top is just a trail intersection, not a peak), but the nature was lovely and found some solitude. My legs were jello by the time I got back to the car.

As previous reviewers have said, the first two miles will get your blood flowing for sure. The trail is also pretty rocky about halfway up. I went in mid-January and the last mile up to the peak was covered in about 4 inches of snow. I probably would have lost the trail if it wasn’t for the footprints of previous hikers in the snow lol. Lastly, I never actually got to what I would consider a “peak”, but maybe I turned around too soon. It got pretty cold, windy, and foggy towards the end so I ended up heading back when my Apple Watch said I’d gone about 3.95 miles. Oh yeah, even though I didn’t make it to the top, the views on the way up were beautiful through the bare trees.

It was a good hike first 2 miles difficult. You get spectacular views along the way. After 2 miles levels out to a trail intersection where we turned back. Nice hike
