Did this hike with my wife and we had 20-25lbs on our packs. It was a pretty moderate hike. A few steep up and downs but was gradual most of the time. It also had lots of flat hiking. This hike would be best enjoyed before the leaves come out or after they are gone as we had great views to the east and west at the same time for majority of the hike. There were a few view locations if you do hike during the summer. Halfway is a shelter and has a picnic bench and a super nice privy in case you have to use the bathroom. Guthook app said 6.6 miles and my Apple Watch said 6.9 miles.

We had a great time on this trail. We only hiked a few miles on it but the views at the top are beautiful (leaves not on trees yet). Looking forward to going back.

Gorgeous trail. Rhododendrons in full bloom, felt like a tropical jungle in some spots.

Backpacking

Pretty easy hike if you start on the 43 side of it. excellent views at several different spots. could easily be turned into an overnight backpack trip for those in no rush. there is an AT shelter about 3/4 of the way through, but NO WATER on the trail.

I'm puzzled why the overview states this is recommended only for very experienced outdoorsmen. I've done the section from VA-43 to Cove Mountain shelter with my dogs multiple times in the last 3 years, and the section from Jennings Creek to the shelter twice. It isn't any more difficult to follow than any other section of the AT I have ever hiked, nor is it particularly strenuous. During leaf off there are some nice views of Sharp Top Mountain about 2 miles after you leave VA-43.
