I am a resident of Salisbury, Vermont and have been hiking this trail my entire life. This trail is EASY, as there is a dirt road going up the entire trail to Silver Lake, as GMP (Green Mountain Power) often has to travel up there for work. The trail is very accommodating to individuals with injuries or the elderly. There are also rocks along the edges of the trail for people to sit and take breaks. Dogs also love this trail, and there is plenty of water along the way. The only time this trail would be considered more difficult is when there is still snow on the ground, and being in Vermont, expect to see that until April with most winters. I would suggest wearing YakTrax while the ground is still frozen. The parking lot often overflows, as people use it for a place to park while going for a run, hiking the trails, or camping up at the top. This trail also does not have to be 5.3 mi. If one is hiking from Salisbury, to hike to Silver Lake, it is only about 1.3 mi one way, unless they decide to do the hike around the entire lake once they get to the top. One does not need to do that to enjoy the lake though, there is a sand beach on the front side of the lake. There is also the option of hiking to Silver Lake from the other side in Goshen, where the trail is much shorter and way less steep. Unfortunately though, the trailhead is much more difficult to locate there, and the road to the trailhead should only be traveled after the snow and ice melts.

There's a large parking lot completely filled and overflow onto the road. This is not a lightly trafficked trail as listed.

Hit the trail after it dropped a few inches. Pretty challenging at times with half snow covered rocks. Would do again though.

A nice on the easy side of moderate hike. The leaves on the west side of the pond made it a little hard to follow the trail, but it mostly runs about ten feet from the waters edge so it’s pretty hard to get lost. The pond and surrounding areas are beautiful right now.

It was a quite challenging trail not because of elevation but lots of rocky ground. I would say this is hard-moderate trail.

Really enjoyed this hike. Starts with some uphill on a well defined path which takes you by Lana Falls where you can go off the defined path a bit to get a closer look. Then you go to the right when defined path ends to begin the loop around the lake. Beautiful views of lake, shady and not horribly difficult but there are a few scrambles. Not too buggy but we had bug spray on! I will add this to my list of go to hikes.

Lovely, mostly shaded trail. Uphill at first, but not strenuous. There are some blazes, but it could’ve been marked better (we actually verified with other hikers at one point if we were on the right track). Some perfect resting points with beautiful views of the lake, and a sweet overlook of the falls. Wasn’t too buggy in August.

The west side of the lake is a pretty crummy scramble through mud. you can't see the lake very well for most of the trip due to the dense trees. the falls on the way up are very impressive, and I might suggest an alternate route that will allow you to see them better.

Great hike with the dogs! Took an hour forty-five with some exploring and stop at the beach for a doggy swim.

Someone should ammend the description to say best from May to October. There was still quite a bit of snow (deep in places) and ice on the trail. The right side of the lake (your right) was mostly a scramble, especially with the ice and the lake was still iced over on April 7. Definitely a nice hike if the trail was in better conditions.

Coming up from the parking lot the trail is wide and well maintained. It's a steep climb the first 1.5 miles but not hard. We started the loop headed west around the lake. Between mile 2 and 3, the trail gets pretty primitive. At times it's hard to find the trail and ended up hiking over very rocking terrain. I feel like this route doesn't get a lot of traffic. Once you round the far end of the lake the trail gets better. By mile 4 or so you are back on the wide maintian trail. We started hiking around 9:00 am and had the trails pretty much to ourselves most of the time. By 11:00 when we were headed back to the car we passed many hikers heading up. The parking lot was full when we got back to the car. All in all, it was a great hike and I would definitely do it again.

This would have been a 5 star rating if there had been a few more open views of the lake. We took advice from previous reviews and did right side (over dam) first. First half of loop quite challenging underfoot. Completed in under 3 hours despite recent hip replacement.

We hiked this trail yesterday with our pup. It’s a beautiful trail with views of Silver Lake and the Falls of Lana. It took our group of 4 (plus pup) 3 hours to complete. We did stop at the small beach near the picnic area of Silver Lake to let the pup swim and chase tadpoles. The trail is accurately rated as moderate, as there is a lengthy incline at the beginning to get to the falls and there are parts around the lake where you have to navigate up and around large rocks, boulders, and fallen trees. Don’t let that discourage you! It was great to have a trail that varied in terrain and the trees provided a welcome shelter from the sun. We highly suggest it!

A very nice walk around a mountain lake. The trail is easy to follow. Most of it is a wide dirt path except the right side of the lake which is narrow and has rocks and roots to navigate.

Went on this hike last weekend! Took about 3 hours total. Jumped in the lake right before heading back to car. So much fun!
