This hike follows the combined Long Trail and Appalachian Trail northeast from Route 9 in southern Vermont. There is a large paved parking lot at the trail head, which was not crowded on a Tuesday in September. Near trail start hikers get to cross the William D MacArthur Memorial Bridge, a pretty neat structure. Farther up the trail goes through the middle of Split Rock and then across a power line swath (which provides a good view west (toward Mount Anthony) and east (toward Mount Snow). Beyond the power line swath the trail enters Glastenbury Wilderness (recently created, just back in 2006). The official trail bypasses the actual summit of Maple Hill, so I did a short bushwhack there (but no view).
