A wonderful trail filled with a large variety of scenery. The trail starts out at the south end of Grassy Flats. As you hike through some sandy rocky paths filled with Juniper and sage the smells are so fresh and makes you feel like you are in the Wild West. After a couple miles you will notice a small stream flowing next to the trail and grasses appear greener, the Junipers and sage disappear, Pinyon Pines, Oak and Fir trees are getting thicker. You hardly notice the elevation gain but you can look back and see Grassy Valley in the distance. The further you go the canyon starts to close in and the majestic Ponderosa pines emerge. Not too many are left due to the logging in the late 1800's. Aspen trees and more Pines and Firs are reaching for sun. Hawks were screaching in the tree tops. The large granite is exposing more and more as you get deeper into the canyon. There is one very large Ponderosa standing that was sparred from the old growth cutting. It is a grand daddy of all the trees there. Higher and higher up old horse corrals and campsites are visible. A spring shoots out from under an old tree and trickles down into another stream. Wild flowers are abundant along with the mosses clinging to the small rocks and around old trees. Ferns and vines line the streams, birds and small wild life can be heard through the trees. Deer living here must think it's a haven for them with all the grasses and water. Squirrels jump from tree to tree and other critters scurry on the floor. Don't rush yourself here before heading up a few switch backs to reach Summit trail. Perfect trail for the Nature lover,
