Virgin River Rim Trail is a 4.4 mile moderately trafficked out and back trail located near Duck Creek Village, Utah that features beautiful wild flowers and is rated as moderate. The trail offers a number of activity options and is best used from May until October. Dogs are also able to use this trail but must be kept on leash.
I love this trail! Many get confused and take an old access road next to the trailhead sign. This hike takes you up on top of the RIM. You have Grand Canyon like views for miles. It’s actually part of a continuous 33-35 mile hike to Afton, Utah where you descend the rim. Don’t take the access road to the left the parking lot!!
I’m not sure why this trail has such a high rating. It’s true that there is almost no one on it (vs. the Cascade Falls), but the other trail at least ends in a waterfall. This trail just has a few glimpses of the valley, but you get similar views walking to the waterfall. (Although in fall / winter - the falls are an unimpressive trickle.) There were 4 trees fallen on the trail that you need to scramble over. The AllTrails route is incorrect. It starts halfway on the dirt road from the highway to the trailhead. And the app’s route from the trailhead does not match the actual trail for most of the journey. Also, the app’s route stops abruptly while the actual trail continues on for some ways. If you visit either the falls or this trail, the trailhead has a large parking lot (~30 vehicles) and 2 compost restrooms.
This is mainly a walk along an access road which is why I rated the trail lower. It’s a very easy hike and good to stretch your legs, just don’t expect deep nature immersion! Also please note the trail takes a very different route than what’s noted in AllTrails. Looks like there have been landslides recently which may explain the deviation
The trail was beautiful! It wasn’t crowded, we only saw two other parties and a group of mountain bikers. The view was 10/10. I took my brothers who are not experienced hikers and they did pretty well. I felt like it was a pretty easy and simple trail. The path is clearly marked all the way to the top.
Mountain biked it. Challenging in places, nice view at the top. Exhilarating on the way down. So steep at the start, personally, I would not hike it.
The trail head to Virgin River Rim Trail is at the same starting point as Cascade Falls. The trail shown on the app is not very accurate - I was on the trail the whole time and the app showed me way off trail. The end of the trail on the app is not the end of the real trail, it keeps going for a good ways after. Beautiful trail though and didn’t see a single other person while hiking, so great if you want to get away in nature.
