The Upheaval Dome Overlook Trail offers views of a spectacular geological formation - a mile-wide crater of mysterious origins, possibly caused by a meteorite that created a big splash of minerals when it hit or a salt dome that originated from within the earth. The rocks along the trail tilt away from the dome as a result of the impact. Upheaval Dome doesn't fit with the rest of the Canyonlands terrain -- it's obviously not the result of gradual erosion like the rest of the park, but rather a dramatic deformity in which rocks have been pushed into a domelike structure. At one time, it was believed that the dome was formed by a hidden volcano, but a more recent theory suggests that a meteorite may have struck the earth here some 60 million years ago.

Great views of the crater but not great views of the canyon compared to the rest of the hikes

Very crowded. Decent views of the crater but there are better hike options to do.

The second view point is worth the extra mile - you can see the entire view!

I thought this one was just okay. Incline all the way up to the first lookout. I think there are better lookouts in this park, but I was intrigued by the “mystery” of the dome’s formation. I didn’t feel the need to do the second lookout. Was also SUPER windy when I was up there— hung onto the information sign to keep my balance.

Amazing views! Relatively easy hike with lots of stair climbing that may be hard on the knees of some hikers. Definitely recommend.

One of the more interesting hikes in the area, primarily for the mystery of the crater’s origins and the very unusual appearance of the crater. The hike was easy, with lots of cairns to guide the way.

Very interesting place. They aren’t sure if it’s an uplifted area or an impact creator from a meteorite. Strange looking place and worth the visit.

Great hike! The trail gets more interesting/challenging to the second overlook, but it’s still a pretty short trail. 1.8 miles to the second overlook and back. The crater is cool to see since it’s so unique to the area!

Just didn’t find this trail or the overlooks remarkable. It was fine, but I thought there were much better views in Canyonlands (not to mention other nearby parks). Didn’t get the reward of an incredible view I hope for when I hike!

Hot. Fairly easy walk, but the view at the end (2nd overlook) is one of the best I’ve seen.

Very fun trail. First overlook was an amazing view but there are amazing views along the way between the first and second overlooks as well.

One of the best hikes I've ever done. Incredible views and formations, great colors, extremely fun scrambles, very exhausting, and best of all, not another person on the trail. Very hot, very exposed for stretches, brought 4 liters of water and drank it all. Started off from the parking lot at about 630, started with the short miles and a half trip to the crater views, then started on the trail clockwise. Did the trail into the crater at the bottom, then started on back up. I would recommend waiting for a little light before starting as it's a fairly steep descent, and as even say, it can be hard to follow the trail at points. The scrambling for the first couple of miles once you round the bottom were easily my favorite part, although very tiring. Overall with the extra sections it ended up as 12.5 miles and I did it in 5 hours flat with a decent amount of camera breaks.

We hiked this right after a storm passed through so it was a little muddy. It is pretty moderate but has some steep inclines to bet to the lookout. I recommend it.

Interesting hike across the rocks - watch for cairns to guide the way. Short hike to the overlook - we did not do the hike that circles the area.

Climb well placed stairs, and hard pack dirt to a gorgeous oddity within the park. Stop at the first overlook, which is an east-facing view, or continue on 5 tenths of a mile to a western facing overlook. Limited to zero shade. Parking can be busy, but give it a few - people come and go, routinely. Always worth the short hike.
