Getting There

The Upheaval Dome Overlook Trail offers views of a spectacular geological formation - a mile-wide crater of mysterious origins, possibly caused by a meteorite that created a big splash of minerals when it hit or a salt dome that originated from within the earth. The rocks along the trail tilt away from the dome as a result of the impact. Upheaval Dome doesn't fit with the rest of the Canyonlands terrain -- it's obviously not the result of gradual erosion like the rest of the park, but rather a dramatic deformity in which rocks have been pushed into a domelike structure. At one time, it was believed that the dome was formed by a hidden volcano, but a more recent theory suggests that a meteorite may have struck the earth here some 60 million years ago.

Toilets, picnic tables and trailhead parking is available at the Upheaval Dome trailhead. Island in the Sky Visitor Center offers exhibits, publications and information, as well as a park orientation video may be viewed. Water is available seasonally. Willow Flat Campground is open year-round on a first-come, first-served basis. There are twelve sites with tables, fire grills and vault toilets. Firewood and water are not available. Sites are $10 per night (Interagency Passes honored).

The Island in the Sky is the easiest Canyonlands district to visit in a short period of time, offering many pullouts with spectacular views along the paved scenic drive. Hiking trails and four-wheel-drive roads access backcountry areas for day or overnight trips. To reach the Island, take US Highway 191 to Utah Highway 313 (10 mi/16 km north of Moab, or 22 mi/35 km south of I-70) and then drive southwest 22 mi/35 km. Driving time to the visitor center from Moab is roughly 40 minutes. Directions to Upheaval Dome from Island in the Sky Visitor Center: Drive southward on Utah 313 approximately 6.25 miles to the junction of Main Island Road and Upheaval Dome Road. Bear right at this junction and drive 5.5 miles to the parking area for Upheaval Dome.

Short nice hike! Great for sunset hike because not too far or difficult trial. Trial well marked. (Hiked 7/17/20). Kinda on rocky side.. that must be why it’s rated moderate.

Short hike, awesome views. A bit of a mystery of what you were looking at at the top which kept in interesting.

We only did about half of this hike, stopping at the first viewpoint and not going to the second. However, it was amazing. The payoff at the end is spectacular and beautiful. It's a bit of an uphill climb, but not too extreme. Totally worth it on a trip to Canyonlands.

Proper footwear is so important, saw young teenagers slipping in sneakers and flip flops, lots of tears too. Loose pebbles and sand cause slipping when you least expect it. Moderate/hard unless you’re used to hard trails. That said it was a great trail, amazing scenery. Love talking to people from all over the US. Be safe and have fun!

Hike to the first overlook. Steep incline initially but leveled out quickly. View was nice and worth the trip. We were there at 2pm in July, so VERY hot and uncomfortable, but imagine would be very pleasant and not too strenuous for kids or the more “out of shape” earlier or later in the day.

Great views! Would Recommend children being self-sufficient for this trail. There are one steep ledge going to the second outlook as well as inclining rock to reach views.

Out of the five hikes we did at Canyonlands NP, this was our least favorite. It was fun, but the dome was a little short of magnificent. The second viewpoint is FAR BETTER than the first. There is a fence down there, but you can easily get around it for better photos. If you are short on time here, I’d skip this one. It’s good but not great.

Pretty quick hike up to the top, but I was a little underwhelmed with the view at the top. Would prioritize whale rock over this one if I only had time for one.

Fairly easy hike. Def more of a challenge going to the second overlook. The first has a better view, but the second is a great place to kick back and eat lunch (there's shade). I went at 1p and was hot but not unbearably. Took me longer than 50 mins tho. :)

Honestly, my thought when reaching the first overlook was "That's it?" It was kind of lame and not really worth walking all the way up there in high 90's. I didn't bother to continue to the second overlook. I really recommend skipping this hike unless you really have the urge to brag that you've seen an impact crater...even then, there are easier ones to see. Awesome trail - not as heavily trafficked as many of the other trials in the park. Getting to the first outlook is pretty easy as it is just steps for a bit. The second outlook takes a lot more scrabbling; however, there are stairs built in on some more steep parts (much appreciated). This trail is also really well marked. You’d have to be trying to get lost to lose your way.

Very well marked. Starts off with lots of steps, so be ready. Hiked it with our 3 kids (ages 16, 13 and 10). We only went to the 1st overlook and that took us about 25 minutes round trip.

Amazing location, unique in its own. Hike is short to the first overlook and can be a scramble to the second. I loved it at sunset though and hung around to watch the Milky Way after!
