This is one of my favorite hikes of all time. The views at the Rim Overlook are already great, but do yourself the favor and continue on to Navajo Knobs, which is amazing. It's a long hike - it eventually took me about 4.45 hours - and includes some scrambling at the end, but it's not dangerous (no major drop-offs during that part) and the rest of the trail is exhausting overall, but never too strenuous at any specific point (there are also quite a few flat parts where it's possible to reenergize oneself). The trail certainly showed again how Capitol Reef is possibly the most underrated National Park out there.

Long trail with some scrambling at the end, great views all around

October is a perfect time if year to take this hike. My husband and I took our 3 kids and left about 1215, weather was clear, cool and nice. Hike is long but worth the trip. Pay close attention to cairns they are regular but some had been knocked over. There are 500 foot drops in a few places, young children would make me nervous.

Hard but rewarding.

Beautiful hike with incredible views throughout but especially at the end. Felt much longer than 4.4 miles to reach the top, but it’s a steady uphill, never too steep other than a brief scramble at the top. We started at about 7:45 and were the first people on the trail.

Incredible hike! Start early if you can to avoid crowds. Past Rim Overlook, I only saw a couple other hikers. It's really not that strenuous of a hike, but it definitely feels longer than 8.7 miles (my phone said I did around 10, but not too sure how accurate that is). At the very, very end you have to scramble to the top. The views are amazing!! And really pay attention to the cairns. A lot of areas look like part of the trail, but they're not. I got a little mixed up at one point and had to back track. Would definitely recommend!

The 360 views at the top are incredible. That being said, this hike took a lot longer than I expected, and is worth an earlier start. It is consider the most difficult trail in capitol reef.

I don’t consider this “hard”. To traverse this area requires going up and down the monocline, but it’s not that steep. Most of it’s slickrock. The payoff at Navajo Knobs is the view of the monocline. It’s sort of a light bulb moment. There’s a short scramble at the end.

Certainly long and difficult, it takes 5 to 6 hours A / R, there is no shade but the arrival at the top and just wonderful.

This was my favorite trail in the park. I started the hike around 7:45 am and only passed one other couple. I had the top to myself for a bit and there was a good amount of shade since the sun wasn’t fully up. It’s very windy on the second half, so be careful along the ridge and at the very top. I would give about five hours total with enough time for breaks. Highly recommend if you want a challenge!

Tough hike that’s almost totally exposed to the sun. We started around 10:15am at the end of September and wish we had gone out a bit earlier! Bring plenty of water and sunscreen along. The ascent is difficult and a mental challenge, but the 360 views at the top are gorgeous and well worth the effort. There are cairns lining the trail, but they’re not always obvious or super well marked. The ascent took us about 2.5 hours with plenty of rest and picture taking while the descent was closer to 1 hour and 45 min.

Amazing hikes with great views along the way. The final climb at the top is not too difficult and so worth it! We even had sell service at the top and could video call our family at the top, making them jealous. We had the top for ourselves for over 2 hours!

great trail with a lot of climbing but the views along the way to the knobs were fantastic. It was well marked with cairns along the slick rock.

An excellent trail if you're looking for something with a little more length and a little more solitude in Capitol Reef. Nothing to difficult, there is a little scrambling if you want to be at the very top of the knob, but not much. Pretty well marked, good views, would make a fantastic trail running trail with how many flats and smooth sections there are.

Best trail in Capitol Reef— in fact, a must-do if your a biker exploring the park, in my opinion.

This is one of the better trails in Capitol Reef NP, in my opinion. It is a rigorous hike, but those in decent hiking shape shouldn’t have a hard time, other than heavy breathing and a good calf work out! As far as shade, it’s not a shaded hike, but you can find shade behind boulders, large shrubs and ledges. You do pass Hickman Bridge Overlook and the Rim Overlook (the latter is awesome!) It’s totally worth it at the top. It’s definitely worth it in the end. Just make sure you have the map downloaded as there are a few misleading cairns and washes on the trail

Beautiful view at the top. Fun to hike on some huge slabs of rock, but sometimes the direction of the trail was a bit confusing.

Well marked trail. Steady grade. The views along the way, vegetation, and geology were all great. The view from the very top exceeded my expectations.

Did this hike over Thanksgiving. Gorgeous views that show the geology of the land. Mountains visible in distance. Few people after the rim overlook, but it’s most spectacular after this point. Worth climbing up to the top at end.

Great hike. About 9.5 miles round trip with a rock scramble at the end. Do it! Amazing panoramic views of the park. The last 2.4 miles are fairly easy compared to the hike from the parking lot to Rim Overview point. Mostly exposed so start the earliest you can. Took about 5 and a half hours including numerous breaks to take in the views and a few pictures, and a half hour lunch break. Lightly trafficked so if you're hoping for peace and quiet this is your deal.

Amazing hike, read the reviews here first. Great to get beyond the nerd barrier and crush some KMs. Easy, safe scramble to the summit, even for spooked cowards like myself. do it.

Incredible hike! Especially the last 2 miles along the slabs up to the knob, starting about 20 minutes after the first overlook of the road. It can be quite windy at the top even when it seems quiet down below so be prepared. But if you push through the 360 degree views are well worth it.

Spectacular trail. I would rate this moderate with the last mile being a little more strenuous. But overall it is a good moderate trail. The entire trail is beautiful with amazing views everywhere you look. Even better, the hike back down is just as beautiful as the hike up . If you fully summit the top, you are rewarded with 360 degree views. I was not expecting that and it was such a wonderful surprise. The trail itself is not difficult to follow. The only time you could get off trail is on the slick rock if you don't look out for the cairns. But even then, its hard to get off trail as it follows the rim. And while the hike up is upwards, there is some rolling to it so you get some descent while hiking up, and vice versa, the down hike does have some up hill in it . Overall this might go up as one of my favorite hikes as it was all around enjoyable. Not overly strenuous but still provides a good workout, gets in some solid miles, has a true summit that is worth it, but the hike up and back overall is also breathtaking.
