Getting There

Northern route to Mt. Nebo's highest peak. Mt. Nebo at 11928 feet is the highest, and southernmost peak in the Wasatch Range. It is a mountain of three main peaks. The first three and a half miles of the hike are easy with only about 1400 feet of elevation gain. Hike through beautiful grassy meadows accentuated by white fur and quaking aspens. The final leg of the hike is the toughest with 1300 feet gained in three quarters of a mile scrambling up loose shale and black lime stone. This hike is a steep one but it is definitely worth it - the views are spectacular. Nebo is an excellent hike for anyone who likes to bag high peaks and get away from the crowds of closer more frequented peaks. There are two or more routes one can take to the summits of Nebo. From the bench trail you can climb directly to wolf pass then to the north summit or travel further south and up to the south peak. Do not start this trail at the paved trailhead. Be sure to head right on the jeep road about a half mile for the actual trailhead

Drive along Mona Pole Rd at the Nebo Bench Trailhead. Continue about .3 miles up the road, cross the cattle guard, and a small parking area is visible on your left. Park here. No fees or registrations are required.

Uinta National Forest Supervisor's Office 88 West 100 North Provo, UT 84601 (801

From the north on Interstate 15 take exit 252 at Payson UT follow the Nebo loop road to the Nebo Bench/Monument Trailhead. This can also be reached from the south by taking exit 225 at Nephi. From the trail head parking you will find two trails. The Nebo bench trail is at the south end of the parking lot. This trail also goes to the summit but is longer and steeper. We did not take this trail. There is a small dirt road near the north end of the parking lot. This is the trail we recommend. You can drive the half mile or so of dirt road to another parking area The trail heads west along a barbed wire fence.

Tough hike. Add to that a freak snowstorm at the top and you have what is called an adventure!

I love hiking but this trail is all up and not pretty. One and done. Very steep at the end. No cairns to help you stay on the safe trail. Hiker beware!

Excellent. Very good condition. It involves ridge walking which can be treacherous and it is really dusty near the bottom. Beautiful views and worth the climb. There is no water.

This is the only hike I’ve considered uphills both ways. Lol This hike was hard. It was beautiful, and worth it.

First half is relatively easy through a meadow until you get to the shelf and then it’s a steep hike up with a rock scramble on the ridge to nebo. Spectacular views although a bit obstructed by air pollution presently.

First half is great! Last part was a little scary for me! I had to sit several times to hike down. But I loved it!

Lots of fun! The air pollution is evident, and the sun/heat can be brutal. No water sources on trail. Trail is pretty straightforward and easy to follow. First few miles will make you sweat a bit, and then the trail just goes straight uphill.

Fun little trail that I think is doable for most able bodied adults. I'd rate this as a Class 2 hike, I never felt that I realistically needed to use 3 points of contact except maybe right at the summit where you have to scramble a little bit. The first 3.0 miles is steady with around 2000' of elevation gain, it's pleasant with level areas where you can catch your breath so don't be afraid to push yourself. The last mile is up the "false summit" as people are calling it here, it's fairly obvious that it's just part of Nebo and not the actual summit. This ascent is around 1000' feet It looks a heck of alot more intimidating than it actually is. This was probably one the of more stable and easy to follow trails I've hiked in the Wasatch, very easy and mostly stable footing all the way to the summit. We brought a dog and she was able to make it to the summit easily. Overall we made it to the summit in 2hrs 20 Mins and down in around the same with 20 mins at the summit, so around 5hrs total. We hiked at a brisk pace.

Up and down for a while and then up up up up fake peak down up made it!! Definitely start early, we start at 6:30, bu as we comeback the trail looks longer for the heat, suggestions: poles, lots of water, sunscreen, camera, because you will say I did it!!

It’s best to start hiking as early as you can to avoid the heat. We ended up starting late due to latecomers in our group. Beautiful hike, make sure you sun screen up as there is limited shade trees.

Beautiful trail, beautiful day. Wasn’t planning to do Nebo this morning, it just kind of happened that way. Missed my turn for North Peak trail and decided to summit instead. 11,928 feet! Tons of fun - I was by myself but would have loved to share the experience with friends or family.

Saturday. Lots of people. The parking lot was packed but everyone on the trail were respectful and nice. Lots of hunters out too. Like everyone else said, this trail is hot and steep! It's not my favorite but it was on my peak bagging list. It has nice views and I saw a small bull moose around mile 2
