Paria Canyon-Vermilion Cliffs Wilderness Area requires a permit with associated $6 fee to enter. This is a very intense, quick, approach into Buckskin Gulch. It cuts off almost all of the stagnant pools, and several miles of the gulch, dropping directly into the narrows. Rappeling equipment is required for this approach. Some hikers continue east along Paria River Canyon to Lees Ferry, or west along Buckskin Gulch to the Wire Pass Trailhead. The route shown on this page has the hiker taking a left into the Paria River Canyon and ending at the White House Trailhead. Overnight stays in the canyon require a permit from the BLM. Please visit this site for permits: https://www.blm.gov/programs/recreation/permits-and-passes/lotteries-and-permit-systems/arizona/paria-canyon If you're bringing a dog for an overnight stay, the dog also needs a permit. Although dogs are allowed in Buckskin Gulch, they are not recommended for this route, as there is rappeling and steep drop-offs involved. Paria Canyon is the longest slot canyon in the world and has four main points of entry: White House Trailhead, Wire Pass Trailhead, Middle Passage, and Lee's Ferry Trailhead. There are several clusters of campsites throughout the canyon. Beware, there are rattlesnakes in this area. Other potential wildlife includes canyon wrens, peregrine falcons, condors, and great horned owls. Keep an eye on the weather and watch out for flash floods. It gets very hot in the canyon, so it is not recommended to do this hike in the middle of summer.

Incredible hike! This hike is not a hike you just show up and do. The drop in is intense and needs to be done with climbing gear. Also, the road to the trail head needs to be done with high clearance and 4 wheel drive. Pack plenty of water because you will need it. Took our group of 4 about 7 to 8 hours to complete. It is amazing! Every corner provides something new and aw inspiring! Best hike I have done in southern UT.

If you don't have time to do the entire gulch this is a great compromise. You get to see some of the best parts of Buckskin in one quick hike. The gulch is absolutely beautiful; so many colors and patterns. The walls are massive, they seem to reach to the sky forever. It's a humbling experience as it will remind you of how small we really are. You don't want to miss this one.

Middle Route to Buckskin Gulch was only a part of our hike. We hiked from White House TH to Middle Route into the gulch, farther to the confluence of Buckskin Gulch and Paria River and upward to White House Th. A very nice hike.
