This trail starts at the hoop Lake Trailhead. You have to ford a stream. The trail climbs first into the the Kabell Creek drainage, where there is a short spur trail 1.5 miles to Kabel Lakes then goes up over Kabell ridge. The trail then descends 300 feet down into the Burnt Fork drainage before the final climb to Island Lake. After you reach Island Lake 8.3 miles the trail continues another 2 miles to a mountain pass where it joins a trail the drops down into the South Slope.

The trail is fairly easy with some cow pies to navigate and a steeper section after you pass the fork halfway in. Fishing is lousy at island lake. Burnt fork creek is full of little brookies

Day hiked to Island lake from Kabell Lake. The trail was steep over Kabell ridge but the view and the lake was worth it.
