The San Juan River makes a series of tight turns - goosenecks - below this viewpoint. The river has carved a deep canyon here, dropping about 1,000 feet below the viewpoint. Geologists say this erosion has uncovered a rock record exposing some 300 million years of time. This state park offers spectacular views of the goosenecks, officially known as an entrenched meander. Accessibility: This is the most accessible portion of the longer Goosenecks Viewpoint Trail which starts from this lookout and heads to the southeast. The longer route has its own trail page here: https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/utah/goosenecks-viewpoint-trail. There does not appear to be any paved or designated accessible parking within 1 mile of the start of the route. The trail surface is asphalt or natural surfaces, and typically at least 4 feet wide. The restrooms at the parking area are wheelchair-accessible. The estimated grade is gentle (3% or less) except for steep and very steep (over 8%) downhill sections nearer to the edge of the lookout. There are railings near the lookout. Wheelchair/mobility equipment or stroller users may need assistance in the steeper sections or to avoid them for safety. All-terrain tires or motorized equipment may be needed for the mostly unpaved surface.
