South rim is very technical for bikes. White road trail is a nice easy road for novice bikers with great vistas of Zion.

Rode yesterday with our local Back Country Horsemen of Utah, Southwest Chapter on the Gooseberry Mesa Trail. ***If you’re not currently a member of the local BCHU Chapter, please consider joining to help us maintain equestrian access to trails, and keep up date on important equestrian trail issues in our state and nationally. Please visit www.bchu.com and join our Facebook page Back Country Horseman of Utah - Southwest Chapter. Gooseberry Mesa Trail is a National Recreation Trail near Apple Valley, Utah of SR 59. At 5,200 this trail offers breathtaking panoramic views of Zion National Park and water carved canyon a below. Directions from I-15, take exit 16 to Hurricane City, then turn right onto Main Street and the next immediate left onto SR 59. Travel approximately 14 miles, and after passing the gas station in Apple Valley you will make a sharp turn left onto Main Street (also called the Smithsonian Butte National Backcountry Byway). This is a dirt road that is very washboard in sections but you will only be on this road for approximately 2.8 miles. Turn left at the sign towards Goosberry Mesa Trailhead. We parked our trailers here (6 trailers) and rode the horses 3 miles down the dirt road to the Gooseberry Mesa Trailhead. The area we parked is actually private property but we had received prior permission to park here. You could drive your trailer to the Trailhead which is three miles further and this road is in much better condition than the first dirt road. If you park at the trailhead then you will have to back track down the road and back to the trailhead when you finish the mesa rim trail section. You could ride it either way but there was more room for all the BCH trailers where we parked. The Gooseberry Mesa Trailhead has a single vault toilet. From the Gooseberry Mesa Trailhead we continued on the road another .5 mile and then turned right to begin the rim trail. On the road we passed several OHV users, but once on the rim trail we didn’t see any other users, but there was evidence (bike tracks) that mountain bikers also use this trail. This area is very popular for mountain biking, however we didn’t encounter any. The rim trail section was just under 6 miles on a winding dirt trail occasionally crossing over sandstone and through juniper and pinion trees, sage, yucca, prickly pear and other varieties of flowering cactus. You can follow my trail recording on AllTrails. ***NOTE: The Smithsonian Butte Scenic Byway will become a sea of mud after heavy rain and on warm days during a wet winter. Always check the weather (both recent and forecast) before driving into this area. ***

This trail was SO FUN! It was super hard to find and follow the trail, so if you want to go a certain way it's frustrating. But, if you just want to ride, it's definitely one of the best trails! Also a great view!

Great loop Park at Gooseberry trail head ride bike north on dirt road. Turn left at windmill. You well see windmill, ride to it to pick up trails. Go slow dangerous spots!! Scenery magnificent! Easy ride. You will come last look out over mountain bluff pick up up trail marker D&B(Donner and Barrow) go left at marker . It will get pretty technical use your best judgment? It ok to walk bike. You will pick up practice trail stay on it! It will bring you out to White trail wide trail road turn left follow it past White trail head stay on main road. You will run into where you started Gooseberry Trail head !! Great loop, great look out points!! Ride with caution!! Take Go Pro!! Not a loop for racing !!

This is a big area with lots of loop options, mostly being used by mountain bikers and folks in ORVs, although it was pretty quiet this cold morning. The ORV trails are probably doable in a high clearance vehicle like my RAV-4 if you are careful and the main dirt road off of Rt 59 is fine for a passenger car. I followed the marked mountain biking trails for some of the time and that was much more interesting than walking on the dirt roads. The views are panoramic in all directions. You can park at different trailheads depending on your plans. There was one place where I took a wrong turn onto an ORV trail and ended up parking 2 miles before I should have, but you won't have that problem if you pay better attention to the map.

Really fun mtn biking trail. Second favorite after guacamole. Definitely harder than guacamole. Had to get off my bike about 50+ times! But fun ride and super cool rock features to ride on

Went on a one-nighter trip with close friends! Found a great spot to set up camp and we had fun exploring around all the rocks and looking out at the great view on the cliffs and to our north we could see Zion! Beautiful hike!

This is a great hike to go on, if you do go try and stay in the center of the trail. I almost got bit by a rattlesnake that was right next to the trail, but other than that it was magnificent.

Great trail, relatively flat which is a difficult thing to find out in Utah. The trail has a very nice flow and rhythm to it and the trail has a fair amount of wildlife on it. Biking on this trail is great for any rider difficulty and has a little bit of many terrain surfaces such as rock, dirt and some loose sand. I highly recommend this trail to anybody who wants a good time.
