We did this around 11am in July and chose it hoping for some shade. We did about 1/2 the hike in the shade and enjoyed the view at the end of the hike up. This is a unique hike where you get to see the different flora near the river and volcanic rock as you hike the last stretch. We saw only a few other people on this hike—biggest reason we loved it!
Karen Detera recorded Freemont River Trail
Park near the grassy picnic area and cross the street toward Gifford House and you will see the trail marked. This hike was near the river (not through the river) which is a benefit for children to stop and play. If you want a hike through water, check out Sulpher Creek Trail. My children also enjoyed playing on the rocks at the top. Most of this hike is actually along the mountain adjacent to the river, but it's safe enough for children. The footing is pretty easy, not too rocky. Definitely make sure you get to the end, at least the first viewing area. There are a lot of flat rocks for you to take a break and have a snack. We went midday and it was pretty desolate. There was a lot of wind that blew up the mountain and a good portion of the hike was in the shade to keep you cooler, but I would bring plenty of water. Also note, you can ride bikes and bring dogs but you can't bring them the entire trail, basically right before the mountain hiking begins. So don't bring pets if you plan on hiking this entire trail. You could possibly ride bikes up to that point and chain them up because there are wooden gates restricting you to bring them. After you finish, you could stop by the orchard or go to the Gifford House and grab some pie to eat in the park :)
A very enjoyable hike starting out as a ramble along the Fremont River and orchards and then climbing up to a beautiful view of the fold and Fruita.
Really easy trail - the only dog friendly one at the park. I went here in February, the temperature was in the 40s, but was warm in the sun. Because it was off-season it wasn't crowded - in fact I was the only one there (on the trail). The park is beautiful - worth seeing. I wish I had camped out there or got a cabin and did some more trails.
The steep climb is fun. Stopped to pick fruit in the orchards on the way back.
The 6 mile drive on the up and down dirt road was harrowing. The trail was pretty easy; prepare to have wet feet. Very neat place!
First half is good for a stroll, second half is a good hike. For our 5 year old son was it a good distance.
Beginning is just ok but once it starts climbing its awesome!
Trail follows the Freemont river near the campground and orchards. Its very easy for the first 1/2 mile along the river. Then climbs up to a valley overlook where there is a great view of the valley.
