We didn't do the loop, but instead went directly over the ridge to the west of whiskey island lake. It was a very steep slope but only 500 feet or so. Coming back down the slope in the rain was dangerous, and I wouldn't recommend it. The view from the top was amazing, and was well worth the climb. Going this route significantly shortened the time it took to reach fish lake.
The fishing at fish lake was great - we caught several arctic grayling, which were really tasty. We did catch some at Sand Lake too, but they were much smaller there.
